S=Size, or how much/many enemies. A=activity. Are they camped out, or prepping for action? L=location. self explanatory. U=unit. Or identity. Are they guerilla/irregulars, etc? T=terrain. What's the area they're at like? E=equipment. Do they have tanks? Artillery? etc.
It's a standard taught to soldiers to organize their observations, and be more understandable to military leaders. Different people will observe different things in the same setting. It may or may not be the most relevant info needed. LOL It's a way of avoiding "Holy crap! There were thousands of em, right over the next hill!" type of report. It may be accurate, but it don't give the needed data.

AL is right, the salute has been around a lot longer than recon. Recon uses the the acronym to easily remember it's mission objectives. But the WORD, means what AL said.

A salute is a gesture or other action used to display respect. Enlisted men salute officers in the military.
