- which could be based on how much energy the item will consume in production and use? What d'ya reckon?

I like the way that you are thinking, but it would be impossible to calculate. It would probably cost more to police, than revenbue it would produce.

The Lib Dems are planning just that.

There is a danger that it might punish larger families with greater energy consumption needs.. but I would hope they have thought of that.

We recently got our rubbish collections reduced to 1 wheelie bin every 2 weeks... not a problem for me... I can go 6 weeks on 1 collection.. but some families had their bin overflowing every week!!! They have struggled.

I think the time has come for everyone to embrace re-cycling and efficient energy use. It's no longer the preserve of the hippy fringe.
