Oh, please!! Don't touch the ring with that overlay garbage or tarnish remover or anything else!!!

Take the ring to a reputable jeweler. Explain that you want to restore the ring for a special occasion. They will do one of several things... they might do the overlay/vermeil... but if the ring is solid gold, it could be all it needs is a professional cleaning and polishing. They polish it... it's like new!

I did this with my grandmother's ring. It was dull and I thought all done in from years of wear. When I went to pick it up, it looked like brand new!!! I also had it sized to fit my hand (which I think was the only thing they charged me for) and the total was $35.

You don't want to risk damaging such an important piece of jewelry. Keep in mind that you can take it in... explain what you need... they will tell you right then and there what they will do and how much it will cost and what you might be able to expect the result to be.

Do not go to a chain jewelry store like Shaw's, Zales, Gordon's, etc. Go to a privately owned small jeweler because the jeweler will be on the premises and can look it over and give you an estimate. Chain jewelers send most of their stuff out and there's no telling who could even help you at a store level. There's not usually a jeweler on premise... just retail sales staff.

Good luck to you... and congratulations on your upcoming nuptials!

If it's your grandmother's ring, you should definitely not coat it with anything. Also, don't be fooled that it's being coated with gold...it's just changing the color!

Use a silver cleaner to help make it sparkle (toothpaste actually works, too).

Become comfortable with the fact that it's an antique, and let that be the value in the ring, along with knowing how much your grandmother cherished it!

I did see an ad for that on TV. I am sorry I do not remember the name. The number for "As seen on TV" is 1-866-277-3366. Maybe they can help.

Oops, as I was looking up the number, I saw that a jeweler answered you. Why don't you check the price of doing that first? It may be surer and safer.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. Best wishes.

For something as special as your grandmother's ring - don't skimp. What you're looking to do will not be permanent and might ruin an heirloom. Think long term. Borrow the money if you have to. Go to a jeweler and ask for options.

It's a scam. Take it to the jewellers. It will cost you less than getting a new ring.
