This is a normal behavior for some dogs to eat their babies.
If the babies die they will sometimes eat them and if there is weak puppies they will sometimes eat them also. This is just a natural instinct that is very common.

My sister's dog had a litter of 12 and the second day we noticed one had disappeared. It was never found so we assume the dog ate it.
We asked a local vet and she says this is actually common. The dog might be able to sense if something is wrong with a puppy and it just happens with some dogs.

Did she eat the whole puppy, or just the placenta and cord? Did you see her eating the puppies or are they just gone? Most likely she hid them to protect them. Or maybe she is just an inexperienced mother. It sounds like she needs to be spayed and comforted since she may start mourning her dead puppies.
A lot of times when puppies go missing people think the dog ate it..most likely that is not true...it was probably the runt and the mom removed it from the rest of the litter and hid it very well.

I've heard that is quite common in the wild. So some of the traits were inherited by their domesticated cousins of wolves & coyotes.
If they can handle eating placenta, a dead pup is no big deal.

Dogs generally are not "canabalistic", but there have been many documented cases of dogs killing their young shortly after birth. If the pups are "defective" the mother dog may refuse to care for them, stomp on them or bite them and allow them to die.

Because the mother dog expresses her sadness by eating her dead puppy and pass this question on to yourself how would you feel if you lost your baby after delivery and the only person you would blame is yourself. So, the female dog is blaming herself.

It's efficient and it gives the ***** more protein so she has more energy to feed the surviving pups. Cats do the same thing.

Usually its because the pup might be sick and she does it to keep the others from getting sick too. Not because she needs protein to feed the others or because she is crazy.
