It depends. You will need to contact your local rescue and ask them. Wherever you will go, their prices will probably differ. Good of you to consider this. You are giving a life a home, a well deserved home. Thank You. Not many people like you that don't think that pedigree is everything.

I think the cost that they charge for pet adoption is very understandable, your not only saving an animal but your covering cost the shelter needs. And the adopting a pet from a shelter isn't expensive at all your pet usually comes with a microchip, it is spay/neutered, has it's set of vaccinations and a big bag of dog food :) . I personally believe it's a wonderful thing my family and I adopted two beautiful and intelligent mixed dogs and I though it was a good deal as well. Also not all shelters get funded by the state so the pricing for adoption is there to help out other pets that do not get adopted right away.

I also adopted my dog from a shelter. It was $80 in Illinois. However, most places have their own "donation" amount. Because humane societies spay or neuter them and give them their first round of vaccinations before they go up for adoption they tend to be more. Many shelters don't do this, but some have relationships with vets who will give a discounts for the services for adopting a pet from that shelter. Also, if you are truly going to adopt a pet, be aware that not all shelters are "no kill" shelters. Some euthanize animals after a certain amount of time due to space restrictions and the likelihood that the animal will be adopted. Try to look at those shelters first to truly save an animal.

The cost varies by shelter. We currently have dogs for an adoption fee of $35. Most shelters charge an adoption fee and a spay/neuter fee (if the dog isn't already altered), so fees can vary from $35 to $230 depending on where you go for the dog.
To find a dog close to you check the following websites:
petfinder.com
pets911.com
1-800-save-a-pet.com
nextdaypets.com
These sites let you locate dogs by breed, and some also let you sort for dogs by your city name or zip code.
Thank you for wanting to adopt a shelter dog!

We had gotten a puppy for $10 and an almost grown dog for $18 which included a coupon for a free rabies vaccine. Plus gotten a coupon towards having them spayed/nuetured. Thats in Alabama.

I'm sure it varies state to state. I adopted Diesel and was charged $75.00. That took care of his first set of shot's him being micro-chipped & neutered. The ASPCA also gave me voucher for a free pet visit at the vet which I got his second set of shot's when they were due.
That turned out to be a good deal for $75.00.

our dog from the shelter was either 150 or 200 dollars but they gave us some money back after we had him nutered so it was only like75 or 100 dollars but where you live and what orginazation (aspca, hsus, ec.) determines the price too our county shelter is alot cheaper than the spca in our town
