Forget that first answer. Not only is that person totally ignorant re: Maui, but they're misspelling everything as well (which won't be helpful for your search). Here's what you do:
1) pick an island
2) pick a resort destination area on that island
3) pick a hotel or condo in that resort area (all resort areas have both hotels and condos)

You can find a good means of sorting through all of that at www.tripadvisor.com

As to condo or hotel - well, I always go condo (in hawaii and wherever else is feasable) and here are the reasons why:
1) condos have more interior space
2) condos are generally quieter environemnts and have fewer people (esp. in hawaii where there are few 'mega-condos')
3) price - condos are usually 50-60% the cost of a hotel room in hawaii
4) flexibility: you don't have to go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner every single day (all condos have a kitchen and cooking ability)
5) you can throw a cocktail party for new friends if that's how you tend to travel. Entertaining in a hotel room is lame.

The upside to hotel? Nothing, really - unless you're in a busy city and want the quick in/out as well as the concierge services.

Waikiki is the best place to visit for a first timer. The major islands have Four Seasons Resorts and you can't go wrong at any of these hotels. Oahu also has the Kahala Mandarin, Maui has the Grand Wailea and Hawaii has the Hilton Waikoloa. Instead of a condo I suggest visiting this site. www.hibeach.com. I frequent the Lanai home on this site for over 10 years and find the Stices to be very nice people. Choose an island and choose a home.

My best bet would be the island of Oahu. I stay at the Pacific Beach Hotel in the Waikiki Area. It is right across the street from Kuhio Beach (a part of Waikiki Beach), and it is "Ewa" from Diamond Head. We stay in the Oceanarium tower of the hotel. The Oceanarium tower is home to the largest indoor aquarium in the world!! The Oceanarium is a three-story, 280,000 gallon "aquarium" that houses a vast amount of fish!!
The Pacific Beach has two towers, the Beach Tower that faces the ocean, and then the Oceanarium Tower.
We have stayed at this hotel four times out of six visits to this island.
The Oceanarium Restaurant has a really good buffet breakfast, if you get the breakfast deal in with your hotel.
I have yet to stay in a condo, maybe on our next visit!! On the outside, the condo's look very nice!

When I was there last, I stayed at the old Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki. It's expensive, but none of the newer hotels seemed to have the same atmosphere of "old Hawaii." True, no hotel offers more than a window from which the affluent can look out at a different world than they come from, and the old Royal Hawaiian was in a sense a place for the rich to go slumming.
But nevertheless, the newer hotels are essentially more like a refuge from the very surroundings you are there to see - they want you to spend as much time on their grounds, and in a faux Hawaiian setting, as possible. The Royal doesn't do that.

NO CONDOS!! On Maui try Wailai Resort and be sure to visit Hana and LaHai'na. LaHai'na is were the hard rock cafe is and it is modeled after a sea faring community. Hana is actually a long drive from the main portion of the island but you get to see the tropical rain forest and it is were the celebrities like to go. Ioa Valley is a good place, you can actually walk on trails through the rain forest and on the other side of the islan go check out the Haleakelah Crater, it is a dormant volcano and is the youngest part of the Islan.

Condo is the way to go if you want to save money...not necessarily on the price to stay there...but this way you can cook some of your own meals and not have to eat out ALL the time. Everything in Hawaii is expensive..including the restaurants. Less money spent on food means more money for other outings and attractions.
