in actuality.. until you pass out.. then your body will resume normal respiration.. now, how long you can hold your breath until you get brain damage is another story.. most people can probably only go about a minute before they gasp for air.. with training many can probably go for 3-5 minutes with only minor side effects.. put people under water and their heart rates slow down and they can hold their breath even longer... though most will still be around a minute here and very few will make it past 5.. I'd bet a couple could go as high as 8 without significant problems.. and in cold water that puts a person into hypothermia you can go even longer.. some people have been drowned for as long as 30 minutes in cold water and suffered no significant brain damage... but if you started holding your breath right now.. you'd probably start getting brain damage in 4 minutes. it's been a few years since I've looked this stuff up.. so the numbers may be off a little, but they will be close
