No, digital cameras typically come with cables to connect them to a computer. If you don't have it, contact the camera maker - some earlier digital cameras used serial or parallel port cables instead of the more recent USB type cable.
Most likely you'll also need camera specific software for your camera, which typically was on a CD bundled with the camera. Check with the camera maker's WWW site if you don't have the disk, and search for the "download" section.
All bets are off if your camera's manufacturer is out of business...

Personally, I prefer to download pictures from the camera card with a card reader. That way I'd don't have to hassle with installing more software clutter in the home computer. Also, when I travel I can tuck the card reader into the camera bag, and transfer pictures from a public terminal or a faraway friend's computer.

Not necessarily. Many cameras have the ability to serve as a card reader by connecting to a computer via a USB cable. Windows XP may or may not recognize the camera and make it a plug and play accessory. If not, software and/or drivers may need to be installed.
Some PC's are being manufactured with multiple card readers on their front panels. HP for instance has computers with slots for Memory Sticks, Compact media, etc.

No. Usually your camera will come with software that will download the pictures and import them into a special camera.
Also, in windows xp, when you connect your camera (or card reader), a new "drive" will appear. You can manually browse it and access the pictures as well.
The benefit to a card reader though, is they are usually multi-format (read multiple formats of cards), are much quicker to download the pictures than off of your camera, and save your camera battery life (because your camera doesn't have to be on).

NO. You don't need a media card reader/writer to download your pictures from a digital camera. However ...I allways found the best way to download photos / files from a card is to use a card reader/writer.

Of course not...most, if not all digital cameras have a USB connection that you just plug a mini USB cable into...and then into your pc. (the camera should come supplied with one, but if not, then you can easily buy one).

Not always, it depends on the camera. Most come with a USB interface that can plug into the USB port, and Windows will prompt you for what action you want to perform.
