You appear to be talking about Guillain Barré Syndrome.

The pronunciation above is actually incorrect. Yours is nearly right. It's Gee-an Bar-ay (it's French so is pronounced oddly if you think in English).

It isn't ACTUALLY a disorder dealing with the spinal cord though. Another name for it is Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy / Polyradiculopathy.

The name tells you a lot about the disease - and it's NOT in the spinal cord.

Acute - onset is very rapid

Inflammatory - the affected nerves swell up and are inflamed, due to the bodies immune system attacking itself

Demyelinating - nerves are surrounded by insulating material called myelin. In GBS this is partially lost.

And most importantly:

Polyneuropathy / Polyradiculopathy - polyneuropathy is damage to multiple peripheral nerves and polyradiculopathy is damage to multiple nerve roots. Both of these are part of the peripheral nervous system OUTSIDE the spinal cord (the spinal cord is part of the central nervous system), although the affected nerves DO originate within the spinal cord.

interesting Q. i have a similar condition and still am not sure what to call it. i am waiting for an appt. with a neurologist but am using a chiropractor.
