How do I tell my liberal Christian father that I'm a Pagan? I've been practicing for two years. I think he suspects that I'm not Christian, but I don't think he knows for sure what I am. I'm scared. For the Pagans and Wiccans, how did you tell your folks?

Here are some does and don’t.

When you let him know, listen more then speak.

Regardless of what he says remember that he loves you and you love him.

Let him ask questions.

Remember this may not be the best time to educate. If he goes on the offensive don’t try to convince him of anything. Listen and echo back at him what he is saying. Affirm that you are hearing him and his concerns.

If he gets angry politely end the conversation.

Speak with respect about his belief system.

Try to leave the conversation open for more discussion later.

Affirm to him that you will always love him.

Let him know that your decision to change faiths is not about reject him or his beliefs but rather it was a positive choice. In other words, you chose to be a Pagan because... (List how being a pagan helps you).

Make sure you don’t have any unfinished business with your Dad. Did you just fight about car insurance or something else? Get that resolved so there is peace between you before you begin this path.

That’s a start.

I’d be happy to chat more if you’re interested.

Well I am an Athiest who was taken to church untill I left home. I figured out that I was a non-believer at about 12 when I started to read Carl Sagan and I agreed with him on the subject almost across the board. I went to church out of a sense of respect, and frankly it amused me.

I know my parents would have a problem with it, and I know they suspect it since I haven't been to church since I left to go to college. But I never really felt it was their business and never felt the need to hurt them with it. So unless they ask me directly, I am not going to tell them. I am 41 now and it has just been an avoided issue this whole time. I guess they don't really want to know. I don't have a problem with that.

If he's a liberal Christian, you have nothing to worry about. It's the fundies you need to fear. My wife's cat got poisoned right after she came out of the broom closet. We got lucky we had a vet close by.

How liberal is he? That's the big question... Don't tell him unless he's super-liberal as I wouldn't want you to get kicked out...

Find the dust pan and just tell them.

I told them openly--AFTER I moved out.
