Something medium sized. The key really isn't the breed, it's how you train the kids and the dog. If you teach the children to respect the dog, any breed would be fine, but the smaller ones (dogs) aren't really sturdy enough to stand a lot of roughhousing.

Me on my soap box-just because a dog is "good with kids" doesn't mean that you can let the kids run willy nilly over the dog. There are a lot of border collies and aussies at the pound and in rescue because people didn't control their children properly and expected an animal to be better behaved than their own kids.

(Climbing off the soapbox)

One that you can train. People always ask what kind is the best dog for this or what is the best dog for that. The dog will behave how it's trained. It has nothing to do with the breed. If you want the dog to not be snappy and be good with kids you have to teach him.

it's how they are trained and there parents temperament, all dogs can be snappy if pulled about, get a book from the library about dogs or just ask the rspca and they should be able to advise you. Always remember that dogs need a lot of exercise and love if you do not think you can give this 100% then get a cat they are much more independent

A Border Collie. I personally grew up with one because my parents asked the same question to a friend of theirs who was a dog person. The border collie I had was loyal, playful and very easygoing with my brothers too. They are the sweetest! The one I had was a mix between a BC and a lab. You could also look at adopting a full grown dog from a shelter because you'll know what you are getting and if it's good with kids or not. In the end though, whatever dog you decide on, go to training and socialisation classes. Good luck!

No dogs are born snappy. Badly behaved children make them snappy.

Without a question get a Black Lab.
Ive had dogs all my life and every lab i have owned i could have left to babysit.
DO NOT get a Collie as they need so much exercise when they are young and the herding instinct is bred into them so they will have a tendency to nip and chase.(I have 2 mad border collie pups)
Small dogs are too yappy and unpredictable. read the book 'Marley and Me' and you will see that a Lab is the only solution!!

A Labrador without question. Fantastic, loyal, gentle with everybody especially children, great fun too.

Lab puppies are expensive. You could try Labrador Rescue and give a home to a disadvantaged one. I am sure you can find them on the net.

Honestly, any dog can be great with kids if it is raised and trained correctly. All puppies will be mouthy until they shed their baby teeth (at around 14 weeks of age). The most common family dogs are goldens and labs because they are notorious for having great temperments, except you have to watch out for health issues such as hip dysplasia.

I would recommend staying away from border collies unless you are already experienced with the breed. Although mine are child-friendly charmers and I know of more like them, a bored, frustrated collie is quite capable of rounding up children and penning them in a corner and delivering a nip if they don't move fast enough.
