When my middle granddaughter, Mackenzie, turned three last summer my daughter had a treasure hunt. She took digital photos of things around the yard like the shed, the mailbox, the play set, the door, the dog house, etc. Each child got a "map" with their name on it which was one of the photos. With an older child or grown up's help they went to the correct spot and got a small toy and another "map" with their name on it. I think there were five or six "maps" in all. They all got the same amount and same toys. It was a riot to watch the excited little kids racing around the yard to find their next prize. There wasn't an obvious winner but they all felt like winners. It was hot that days so Molly (my daughter) had plenty of water and juice available. Then later they had lunch and cupcakes which she deocrated which each individual childs name.

For the person who said she wont remember it.......WRONG!!!!!! My girls remember every birthday they may only be getting ready to turn 4 but with this amazing thing called video and pictures they remember their first birthday and get really excited every year when we start talking about their next birthday so every birthday should be memorable and special. Now as for the question, Last year we did carebears because thats what my girls were into and we had a carebear pinata with pull strings on it rather than having to hit it each kid gets a chance to pull a string and 1 magic string opens the box and the kids go nuts. We just decorated everything in carebear and carebear colors had treat bags and rather than cake we did individial cupcakes for everyone, that was a big hit. And we only invited a few kids that way they wouldnt get overwhelmed and there wasnt as much argueing between children. But whatever you do your little girl will have a great birthday because she's spending it with people that make her happy.

I'm not sure where you are but our local ski centre, indoor snow dome, does tiny tubing. It's an hour on the nursery slope rolling around in tubes and snowball fights, followed by the usual party food, really cool.

Also a game kids love for a time filler while you wait for parents to collect is 'choc in the box'. You put some chocolate, any variety, in a box and the kids have to guess what it is without seeing it. They ask 'is it buttons?', 'is it dairy milk?' or you could use sweeties they like as she's only 3, and whoever guesses right get's the sweets. This goes down well with adults too!!! x

My son turned 3 years old last week and he was part of the planning as to the manner his birthday should be celebrated. Yes at their age, they have their preference and to consider their ideas is a way of motivating them to think. He simply said that he wanted an affair full of kids of his age, (I guess what he meant was an occasion where there are more kids than adults) a Spiderman cake, and some balloons. So that's what he had. All day he played with his friends; he has all the freedom to do anything, and even forgot to take his regular afternoon nap. the party started at 1pm and the last guest left at 10pm. That's when he remembered to sleep. We all know as the whole family can see, thet he really enjoyed his day!

My twin daughters have just turned 3 and we had a balloon themed party. They love balloons so it seemed the obvious choice. We had a whole bunch of balloons pinned up in the house. I had a bunch of latex helium balloons tied to their presents (a new dolls pram each) When they had opened their presents I put them balloons on the dining table with the buffet food. Each of the guests brought a foil helium balloon too. We had a big cake decorated with balloons in icing. It was a great day and everyone had a lot of fun. We still have 23 helium balloons in the house 2 weeks later and the girls love them and play with them more than the prams!

We went to a birthday party a week later at an indoor play area and it just didn't compare to our party! I think whatever your little girl likes theme it on that. Remember at that age things are not really memorable to them... they are to us!

As for gift ideas, I try and get them something that they will treasure. If you live in the UK, H Samuel do a lovely range for girls called Little Princess. You can get silver Jewellery or they do a lovely set of cutlery with little princess on the handles and love hearts. Its a great "grown up set". I got them a set each and made a point of telling them they are for big girls. I also allow them to eat off Mummy's dinner plates now instead of the plastic ones. The cutlery went down better than the dolls prams and yesterday they had hours of fun playing with a box of small rocks Grandad brought round to make a rockery! I even found one in my handbag!

You could go with all the party guests to the zoo, or go to the restaurant "cheese checkers",the kids will have a blast.I would do the presents at "cheese checkers"after they have been running around a lot and playing hart.
A good present for a three year old would be something aducationel, like books about spelling, or place mates where she has to trace letters

My daughter just turned 3. I was going to rent a play space at a moonwalk place or have a big Chuck-E-Cheese party, or rent out a pavillion in the park ..... then I remembered to ask my daughter what she wanted.

"I want pink lemonade, a Boots cake and lots of presents" was the answer I got.

I just smiled and thought to myself 'I can do that'. And I did; it was a great party, I wasn't stressed, she wasn't stressed (except she got too many presents lol) and all her friends had a great time just playing.

For the party theme I would recommend princess or something like that. Just whatever she's into :-) You could have it at a restaurant (but I wouldn't recommend it). Have it at home, invite family and friends over, order pizza (no cooking and easy cleanup!), and have some cake and icecream. As for a gift, get her something that she will keep forever such as a locket necklace.
