You can't..You need to enroll him in a day care..Or at least a dog walking service..He just can't be expected to hold it for that many hours..12 hour shifts mean transport time each way..so are actually much longer..Think of it as if it was yourself..Can you be comfortable holding it for 13 hours? If you can, you are indeed rare..
Many noble dogs will try to hold it, but will soon succumb to urinary tract infections..

I have two dogs 6 and 7 months old. They are both potty trained very well. A dog will not be able to hold anything for twelve hours as we can't.
I work from 8-5 Mon-Fri when I wake up at 6:30 am I'll feed them water is always available and let them in the back yard. I leave home at 8:15 am every morning they come in and are in the house until 5:40 pm Mon-Fri when I arrive. When I get in the first thing I do is let them out in the back yard and they'll use the bathroom and come back in to eat. Back outside again until 8:30-9:00 pm and then back in the house for another day. Sometimes I'll leave them in the back yard which I have a privacy fence so ther're fine.
I never have locked my dog's up in a crate I don't wont to be locked up so I don't do it to them. They were trained with out the crate. I used newspaper and as they got older they basically trained themselves.
It can be done!

Well, I work 24 hour shifts, and I just leave my dogs in a securely fenced yard while I am gone. They get to play, and go to the bathroom whenever they want, and I don't have to worry about them tearing up the house while I am gone.
Most dogs won't be able to hold it for 12 hours. However, you can confine him to a room where he won't be able to get into anything (kitchen, laundry room, etc), put down some newspaper or doggie potty pads, some food and water, and a few chew toys, and he should be fine. You might have to work on teaching him the difference between doing his business on the newspaper (OK!) and doing it on the carpet (not OK), since he is not used to it ever being OK to do his business in the house, he might get confused. It won't take long for him to learn, though.
Be sure to spend lots of time with him while you are at home, and it would help to take him for long walks before you go to work and after you get home.
Good luck!

Unless you live in a really remote area, there should be a doggie daycare or pet sitting service near your neighborhood. If that doesn't work and you have to leave your dog alone that long (that is an extremely long day for a dog to be by itself) try using piddle pads. That gives your dog a place to do it's business. Can you gate off an area of your home so that the dog has access to food and water, toys and a bed/crate, and a potty pad to go potty? This is what we do if we leave our doggies for extended times, but not everyday. Only when absolutely necessary.
Perhaps if you cannot devote the time necessary to care for your dog, its time to find him/her a home where there would be someone to care for doggie all day/every day.

I CAN RELATE TO YOUR PROBLEM. I HAVE A LITTLE MINI DOXIE THAT JUST NEVER COMPLETLEY POTTY TRAINED. WE HAVE TO TAKE HIM OUT EVERY 2 HOURS. WE BLOCK HIM OFF IN THE KITCHEN WITH BABY GATES. A KITCHEN USUALLY HAS LINOLEAM OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT SO ITS EASY TO CLEAN UP. BUT WE FIND THAT IF WE ARE GONE ALL DAY THE DARN DOG WILL HOLD IT UNTIL SOMEONE GETS HOME. TWELVE HOURS IS A LONG TIME FOR A DOG TO BE ALONE BUT IT CAN BE DONE. THE BATHROOM IS TOO SMALL AND IF THE KITCHEN IS TOO SMALL. IF ALL ELSE FAILS MAYBE YOU COULD PICK ANOTHER ROOM. THEN GO TO THE FABRIC DEPARTMENT AT WAL MART. THEY CARRY BIG ROLLS OF A PLASTIC TYPE MATERIAL YOU WOULD USE FOR A TABLE COTH. ITS REALLY INEXPENSIVE. TAKE AS MANY YARDS AS YOU NEED AND LAY IT IN THE ROOM THAT YOU WILL KEEP YOUR DOG IN. THAT WAY IF IT HAS AN ACCIDENT THE PROBLEM IS COVERED. ALSO, DOGS GET LONELY. THEY ARE VERY SOCIABLE ANIMALS. I WOULD LEAVE A TV OR SOFT RADIO MUSIC ON FOR IT. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR DELEMNA.

If you live in a small town like I do, you probably don't have dog walking services or dog daycares. I put my dog in the bathroom with food and water and a soft old blanket. He is fine for a long period of time. When I get home I take him out for a long time for fresh air. You will have a mess to clean up, but as long as you don't put too much food in with him you shouldn't have a big mess. Also you could feed him a little before you put him in and then again when you take him out. If you had a neighbor or relative that lived near by this would be a great person(if they didn't mind) to watch your dog for you. Hope this helped :)

You won't. No dog should be left alone for 12 hour intervals. You will have a MAJOR mess to clean up because he is going to HAVE to go! Plus, you cannot keep water away from a dog for that long without risking dehydration, so don't try to take away the water to decrease accidents. See if a trusted friend or neighbor will come over every 4-5 hours (depending on your dog's age) to let him out. Otherwise, take him to a doggie daycare.

I work all day too. I have five dogs and sitting on 7 fosters.
12 hours is a long day so maybe have someplace for an accident. I let mine out in the morning when I get up then before I leave and as soon as I get home.

you didn't say how old your dog is. the rule of thumb is 1 hour per month after they are a month or 2 old. i.e. if you've got a 9 month old dog, it should be fine for seven hours at least. if your dog is over 4 yrs old and is house broken you shouldn't have a problem. you don't have to deprive your dog of food and water either. my dogs do fine with food in the house and ive been gone longer than 12 hrs at a stretch on the rare occasion with out an accident.

Do you live in a house or apartment....if you have a house and a fenced in yard you might consider a doggie door...very easy to install....or a kennel outside with a large water bowl and a good dog house....if you have an apartment you will want to find someone to watch the dog when you are at work...my dogs make it eight hours but 12 is to much i think....

My dogs have made it 12 hours, but I try not to do that on a regular basis. They are crate trained, and I make sure they are tired before I leave for work.
If you can afford it, a dog walker would be nice. Also, the daycare suggestion is a good one, and you don't have to take them every day-just as often as you can afford it to break up the routine of being crated all day.
