Wake up. Your dog doeasn't care where you live as long as he is with you.
When you stop to go potty or eat take him potty there are restraunts and rest areas everywhere. There is no reason not to take him.

The best thing would be to take him with you. Do you love your dog? It shouldn't be a burden to you if you do. There are a few options - you could crate him while you drive, if he is small enough or your car is big enough. You could let him wear diapers, the baby kind if he is small or the adult version if he is large. If he is housetrained then stopping twoce a day should be enough for him. I imagine you yourself will need to stop to use the bathroom as well. Taking two minutes out to let him do his business and picking it up shouldn't be a problem. It is enjoyable taking your dog on trips - he will give you some company on the long drive. Find out if the apartment allows dogs and of what size, and if there's a deposit required. If it is short term having him live there with you shouldn't be so bad.
If there is no way you can take your "best friend", then try posting ads (craigslist.com) and see if you can find someone to foster him for three months - paid or unpaid. If all else fails find a breed rescue for him, maybe they can find someone who has more time/dedication for the dog.

You are right in planning to not travel across country with your dog. The trip may prove traumatic to both of you. Most likely there is a child somewhere in your circle (neighbor, relative, friend or acquaintance) that would jump at the opportunity to earn some cash babysitting your pet. This would give you the opportunity to call and check on your dog and give you peace-of-mind. It would also give a young man or woman the opportunity to demonstrate responsible behavior, under the guidance of a parent of course. A kennel would be the last resort for your pet because of the impersonal care, but it is an option. Good luck and safe journey.

If you were not allowed to have dogs where you are going I could understand...then I would say you could find a friend or relative to watch the dog until you return.....however...you say you don't want to take the dogs because stopping for him to go to the bathroom is "to much work".....as was stated already...if you pet becomes a burden then you should not have one and you should find the dog a new permanent home.
As far as the trip...many people take their pets on long trips....there are many restops on the way. most of which have dog walking areas....I will bet you will need to stop more than the dog will.....every 4 hours or so...is good for you also...even for just 10 min....

I'm sorry for your dog that you don't think he's at all important enough to stop every once in a while to go to the bathroom. It's too much work you pull over and hold a leash for 30 seconds. Way too inconvenient. It's more likely you'd pee in the car if you never stopped than your dog would.
Give it away. It will be better off without you.

When you stop at a rest area let the dog use the bathroom, whats better, using the bathroom in the car or on the ground. Its not to much to let your dog use the bathroom if you love it. But if you really dont want to take the dog with you, you could ask your parents to watch the dog or a close friend. If you call your vet and tell them what is going on they might let you keep him there until you get back.

You can pay to put him in a Puppy Pound vacation spot, in your area, but that might be costly.
Your dog's bathroom habits might be no different than when you walk him or take him out now, you would just have to walk him around the same time you do, when your at home.
Would any friend or family member take him while your gone.
If not, and you don't mind letting him go, give him to the city pound, they made hold for free, or if no one has adopted him by the time you come back, you can re adopt.

If it's too difficult to let the dog out at the rest stops with you, then you don't need a pet. Put an add in the paper and find him a loving home. Your dog loves you, man. That's not right. If you insist on keeping him, find a friend or relative willing to take him on while you're out of state for three months. You may have to pay room and board for your furry friend.

Do you have a friend/family member who would be willing to board your dog for that time period? If not - most reputable kennels will do so for a fee (somewhat hefty). I'm getting the impression you might be thinking of finding him a new home permanently. If you are not comitted to returning to him - do this NOW! If you can't find a good family for him - there are no-kill shelters/organizations everywhere. Good luck....

If you have any friends or family that are willing to take care of your dog for those 3 months then you should just drop your dog off with them and go on with your business till you get back.
