Personally, I'd recommend a mid-size mutt. A 40-50 lb mixed breed. They seem to have gentler dispositions, IMO.

My shepherd mix dog is great with children. Unless they're between her and food, when they become speed bumps!

Actually, I think your husband is more on the right track. Toy dogs are not a good idea when you have small children. Small dogs are very likely to bite when they feel threatened and with their small size, they are easily threatened. Iwould recommend something like an english bulldog if that is what your husband is drawn to. They are excellent with children and have the most comical attitudes. I think you would grow to love it. Also, german shepherds are good with kids but you will need to get it as a puppy and go through the puppy training and it will be hyper until it is about 2 years old, then it will mellow out a little bit. This could be a problem since your child is only 3. I think my personal recommendation would be the english bulldog.I think that breed would really suite your situation.

a 3 year old is too young to have any dog. owning a dog takes lots of responsibility and time. toddlers are often rough with pets doing things like pulling ears and tails, which puts the animal in the position where it might react aggressively, even though it might be just trying to get the child to stop hurting it. toy dogs are generally not as suitable for small children because they can be stepped on, dropped or treated roughly which could result in serious injury for the dog. However, no animal big or small should be treated in this manner.I would wait until your daughter is older to add a dog to the family, where she could help care for it and understands how to be gentle and treat a pet.

I would not recommend a toy breed, simply because at 3, your child may not be very delicate (no matter how many time her tell them 'gentle') with a dog that size and may accidentally hurt the dog.

Let's make something clear you do not get a dog FOR a 3 year old, it's a bad idea.

ANY dog can be kid friendly, its in the training. I recommend a medium sized mutt that is good with kids (shelters are FULL of them.) Bigger dogs may not be aware of their size and can accidentally knock a small child over.

Have you considered waiting until your child is old enough for the responsibility of a dog? There isn't one breed that is guaranteed to love kids. It is up to you for positive socialization. My dogs are great with kids because I have made sure that they have never had a bad experience with children. A three year old doesn't know that dogs may not enjoy having their ears pulled and could hurt the dog which may make the dog become aggressive (as a defense). Maybe you should try a fish.

Be care-full with a 3 year old. I would say a toy is not the correct choice. Get a medium size hardy dog. Possibly a Sheltie. Great dogs with kids, they will play and follow forever and in general have great dispositions and will make loving companions for years.
Mostly they are tough enough and big enough to handle small children without getting hurt and or hurting the child.

id wait until your daughter is at least six. id advice you that the child may thing the dog is like a toy or something. do not get a bull dog. they scare most young children. id get a friendly dog. like a beagle, golden retriever or border collie. dogs require a lot of care. a 3 year old should not even own a dog.(as in take car of it)

Labaradors are notoriously great with kids, plus your husband won't feel like a wimp walking one. German Shepherd Dogs are also good with kids, if you choose one from show or pet lines. Bulldogs are good, but they tire easily and can be run ragged by small children. They are good with them, however, but you have to consider the mess they will make by slobbering. The breeds I would recommend for your situation are: Labarador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Labradoodles, Goldendoodles, and possibly a German Shepherd Dog (depending on you and your husband's dog training/handling experience).

Labrador or blonde cocker. Avoid bulls.. they are breed to be agressive.. Get a good lab and your kid will have good kind and loyal friend for a long time.. Our Yellow Lab has been sleeping with our son since he was 8, our son now 14 still shares the bed with the lab. they both have problems fitting on the same bed.

Blonde Cockers (NOT AMERICAN BLACK) usually, have the sweetest disposition of any dog out there.
