I am sorry for your loss. I recently lost my Mother also. Yes, you can get the cancer gene from your Mom. Go to your OBGYN and ask to have the BRAC-1 and BRAC-2 gene comprehensive blood test done. The doctor gives you a kit and you go to the hospital and have a blood draw. Myriad is a 24 hour a day testing lab. They have a great website, www.myriad.com. If your doctor uses them, they have a prepared kit and FED-EX label in the box. Your sample is sent to Myriad via FED-EX the same day. After they clear it with your insurance company they will call you for the "go ahead" from you and tell you your payment portion. At this time, you may decline the test. You are assigned a representative who handles the doctors in your doctor's zip code area. You can call them anytime. They will answer any questions you have. I just had it done because of the high risk of breast cancer in my family. I may have this gene mutation. I have breast cancer Stage 1 in the left breast after having a pre-cancerous lump removed from my right breast 6 years ago. The cancer had spread to the other breast, just like my Mom's. Mom had 10 years between hers and I only got 6 years so I am a higher risk than my Mom was. The test results will be sent FED-EX to your doctor. He/she will call you to come in for a discussion of the results. After you get the test back it will say you are positive, negative or uncertain to be carrying the gene. If you already have a family, and dont want any more children, to avoid ovarian cancer, you have the option of a radical hysterectomy. I had that surgery at age 27 so I dont have to worry about ovarian cancer. My surgeon had me get the gene test done to help him decide what to do on my next breast surgery.
If my test comes back positive I will have a double mastectomy to save my life. I am allergic to the drugs they want you to take to keep from having a reacurrence. Talk to your OBGYN about the test. Check out the Myriad website. The knowlege you find and have can and will save your life. Good luck, and talk to your OBGYN.

There are tests for ovarian cancer, Your doctor should be testing you yearly for it, since you have a close relative. If you don;t have a doctor, or if your doctor hasn't brought it up, call him on it or get another.
If caught in the early stages it is curable.
I had a cousin who died of it when she was 42, and she was very overweight and had a terrible diet.
I have heard that eating well, lost of fruits and vegetables and not a lot of junk food can help to prevent it.

Well, you could be in danger later on if you aren't doing what you can now. Eating right, avoiding birth control pills and high doses of female hormones will each help to keep cancers from forming. There are all natural mineral supplements you can take to help keep those female hormones in check, I had endometriosis that has been clearing up the past few months with a great mineral and vitamin supplement. The supplements are inexpensive, easy to take and have no negative side effects.

As with most ailments, diet and exercise. You can't go wrong with eating 5 servings a day of fruits and veggies, and going on a walk every other day, or 4-5 days a week. Make sure to incorporate other healthy nutrients in your diet too, like calcium, and protein, and take a multivitamin. Even still, sometimes genetics just gets the better of us. Wish you luck.
