It was practiced in the olden times becase women who lost their husbands in the war would rather commit suicide than be raped and dishonored by the invading muslim armies. It was totally voluntary. I'm not condoning suicide but do you think you could stop every suicide in your country? Why is the practise of voluntary"Sati" used to tarnish hinduism?

shepherd i said i donot condone suicide, i'm merely pointing why is it corelated to hinduism. Would the suicides in america be related to christianity? Please read tiara's statement, she has understood it very well and explained it brilliantly!

Eastern paths like Hinduism and Buddhism are incredibly deeply symbolic religious paths. Just looking at it on the surface, many people tend to misunderstand and be mislead.

When people first saw the picture of Mahakali ... first reaction..."She is a demon". Sati's act of unltimate loyalty and love needs to deciphered from its deeper aspect. Even some hindus do not understand it, but for those who do, its significance is deeply spiritual and profound.

Some people will look at Sati as negative... but look at how the world fawns over Romeo and Juliet? Or in more modern times ... the Movie Titanic... " You jump, I jump" dialogue rocked the world!!

Where is the difference?, on the worldly basis, all three situations depict the most heartfelt love, loyalty and courage between 2 couples... such intense feelings of love are far and rare to come by....

There have been a number of documented case of this happening even now. It was the British who tried to stop it when they took over India. There were no Muslims then or now. There are a lot of wonderful things about India and Hinduism. Why are you trying to justify things that anyone would find appalling?

That idea that sati has something to do with love is ridiculous. Women were pressured into doing it, sometimes thrown onto the fires. It again tarnishes Hinduism because woman were told that their karma required that they go into the fire. You may want to say that Hindus got it wrong, but the people who said it were in fact as much Hindus as you are.

Romantic? I am sorry, but that is just sick.

I personally have never heard it used to tarnish hinduism, but from what I know of the practice, you'd have to use voluntary in a fairly liberal sense of the word. There have been reports on how people were forced or "forcibly persuaded" to take there own lives, in a similar way women in rural communitites in india occasionaly "jump" (are sometimes thrown/dragged etc.) on the funeral pyres of their husbands

I have never heard of this. I must assume you Surish are Hindu.
The fact is throughout early history when the armies invaded women of all faith and cultures rather die than be gang raped by any numbers of men.
I do not see the tarnish. I see pride. And if it was muslim or me, I would die than to allow one drop of blood or sweat to aid that evil.
