Edison NJ is a great place to live and it is appreciating like crazy. In addition, Perth Amboy, NJ would be a good bet. Good luck!!

I would suggest subscribing to a demographinc info site. That was you can set the criteria you're looking for and see how different neighborhoods stack up. MSN used to have one as part of House and Home but it looks like it's gone. That was the only free one I knew of. Realestate.yahoo.com has one but it's a pain to use but it is free so if you want to spend time with it you can get the infor you need. i would look at South Amboy http://realestate.yahoo.com/Neighborhoods/detail.html?csz=South%20Amboy,NJ and the work south form there. Forget Northern NJ, unless you want to go WAY west and have a 2 hour commute (yes, people in NY do that. It's not even considered all that unusual). Long Island isn't cheap, Bayonne is probably still 'affordable' and Middlex county in NJ along Route 22 isn't too bad as far as price goes. The best best for living close are probably the Red Hook area of Brooklyn which is coming back and as long as you have a car it's not bad.

I don't think anything in the area is more "affordable" than Staten Island itself. Brooklyn & Northern NJ are horribly expensive. At least on Staten you'll save the time & cost of the commute.

That whole region of the country is very expensive, so be aware of that.

Your best bets are probably in Long Island or New Jersey, but your fiance should prepare himself for a long commute.

As you know, New York is one of the most popular cities in the USA, so don't be too surprised to find homes over there a bit pricey

You could live in jersey. The goethals bridge connects the two. Or you could try deep brooklyn and take the verrazano.
