As a garnish, it's because of strictly aesthetic appeal, and price - red onions cost less than others. For cooking, the types of onions used are based on the flavor desired for the dish in question. I often use Vidalia onions for many things, and regular white onions for others.

That depends on what the onions are being used for, Yellow onions are mainly a cheap onion that's OK for cooking. White onions are a little bit hotter and are great for certain recipes like Pico de gallo, mixed with fried potato's etc... Now red or Purple onions are sweet to taste and used on sandwiches and used to decorate or anything a sweeter taste is wanted or desired

The food presentation is much more appealing with the hint of red, and red onions' flavor is much milder to be consume raw then other onions. A lot of restuarant use it because it has less of a "sting" and less likely to overkill the original flavor of the sauce or dish.

Restaurants do not only use red onions. They use different onions for different applications.
Red onions have a different flavor than white or yellow, but might not be used in some sauces or gravies due to their color bleeding.

Because, there are variety of onions that provides distinct flavors that enhances the foods. I dint think restaurants used only one variety of onion. Depending on the menu of the restaurant.

The only reason I can think of is to make it look more appealing and colorful to the client. Remember, presentation is the number one rule.

Maybe because they can't USE people. Thanks for leaving an incredibly rude email to my wedding officiant question. For your information the lady that I have been planning on officiating our ceremony got cancer and is very ill at the moment. We asked her a year ago. Shame on you for putting the cart before the horse and assuming anything. Next time don't give input if it isn't helpful. I have enough stress right now with out old bitter nurses adding hurtful comments.
