equal parts vodka and tomato juice is the original recipe.
Bloody Mary was invented in the 1920s by an American bartender, Fernand Petiot at Harry's New York Bar in Paris. The original recipe called for equal parts of vodka and tomato juice In 1934, Petiot added black and cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce and lemon juice to spice up the drink for New Yorkers when he moved back to the States and worked at the King Cole Bar, St. Regis. Petiot notes, "one of the boys suggested we call the drink Bloody Mary because it reminded him of the Bucket of Bloody Club in Chicago, and a girl there named Mary."

This is the recipe from Patrick Gavin Duffy's book The Standard Bartenders Guide. He collected recipes for drinks from all over the US in the early 30's. It is authentic.
1 jigger Vodka [11/2 fluid ounces]
3 jiggers of tomato juice
1/3 jigger lemon juice
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper to taste
Shake well with ice and strain into a glass
if you can find the book it contains over 1200 recipes for cocktails
plus other drinking info. Enjoy!

Hope this is the "original" you're looking for.. this is what I'd normally do. So I'd start off with a tall salt-rimmed glass (~ 14 oz) with ice and build:
1 oz Vodka
Dash Tabasco Sauce
Dash Salt & Pepper
Dash Worchestshire Sauce
Fill with Tomato Juice (Clamato makes it into a Caesar)
Garnish with a celery stalk.
Hope this is it.. otherwise me and a bunch of others I work with have been making them wrong at work. lol.. but no one's sued yet, so I think we're ok!
