Just as "msnite1969" above said, it all depends.

A background check will typically include a credit check and a criminal check. It will depend on the job as to what they are looking for. For example if you were convicted of forgery, you may not get that job in the bank. But those same charges would be overlooked in say a fork lift drivers position.

It depends on what type of position you are applying for. Most companies just want to see if you have ever been convicted of a felony.
They also may want to make sure that the information that you provided (such as past addresses) matches up with what you have given them.
If it is for a driving position they will look at your driving history too.
They WILL NOT run a credit check unless they let you know that they are going to do so.

It does depends on what the check is for. For instance if its for a job they are probably only going to look at conviction for crimes. If it is a government job or for a security clearance they look at EVERYTHING! Going back years... they will talk to references, former employers, old teachers, neighbors etc.

I run background checks for my job, and normally its stuff that the person has been convicted of. So just about anything that you were arrested for. Besides parking violations of course.
