In eastern thought, Humans are not the only beings of Sentience in the cycles of life and death. There are the animals and insects as well. Some traditions even believe up to beings from other world systems that transmigrate also. Like Hinduism, Buddhism and Taoism believe that there is the Spirit beings as well whom some of us call ghosts, and Hell beings and not forgetting Celestial Beings ( Angels, Fairies and such fit this catergory )
Putting aside "alien beings" and non corporeal beings, just a reborn cluster of "souls" from a destroyed nest or termites already can add to world population in a blink of an eye.
Although that cannot fully answer your question, hopefully it can be a catalyst to broaden the possibilities. :)

The science of Reincarnation is a component part of Vedic understanding that provides the knowledge of the existence of 8,400,000 different species of lives in three planetary systems within this one universe, this one universe being one of millions within the mahat tattva, the material creation.
From universal directors to the smallest microbe, each possesses an individual spirit soul that is transmigrating from one body to another, when the individual soul comes to the human platform of life, there is an opportunity to revive or resurrect the original spiritual nature that is covered over by the material energy.
In the human form of life, through proper use of free will, we can choose to live a spiritual life, a Godly life and return home, back to Godhead, back to the spiritual world, which is our real home, however if we choose to live a worldly life, then according to our works, we receive another material form to perfectly match the mentality that we have created, the next form may not necessarily be a human form.
To avoid the hell of the cycle of the repetition of birth and death is a science that is imperative to understand, to discuss further:-

You are presuming the answer to the question. Assuming reincarnation, it would be just as logical to say that the growth in population is indicative, as those reincarnated would take bodies while new "people' were being incarnated at the same time. Reincarnation could, therefore, be indicated by population growth.
this, however, is only presuming "complete" reincarnation of a "personality", as opposed to any partial reincarnation, or subsumption of a reincarnated "personality" in a new "personality".
As with any mythology or supernatural religion, though, all anybody can do is offer a guess based upon whatever empirical evidence they feel they have.

Traditional buddhist thought would imply that since there is no soul which is reborn, just one's karmic volitions, it is not set that one person must be born into one body. Hard to understand, but may help a bit!?

Reincarnation is a false doctrine. All souls come from God and no soul lives on earth more than once.
