The best thing is ice not heat. I get one ever so often to where I can't even turn my head. I used to put heat on it but then I read to use ice and it really helped. Putting heat on it just inflames the muscle even more causing greater or prolonged pain.

Do not use heat - especially early on. I usually use an ice pack for 20 minutes. That is what my physical therapist an chiropractor recommend. If you must use heat, it should always be followed by ice. Good luck and try to relax. Getting agitated will on;ly serve to exacerbate the situation - I know. Listen to some calming music while you ice. And take deep breaths while visualizing the tension leaving your body with every exhale. Hope this helps... Sauce

The first thing you have to find out what are you doing to cause it. Are you looking one way more than the other that your neck is off line. Try putting a small towel around it to make a collar, to keep your head straight. Gently move your head from side to side slowly. Could be tension building up. be aware of your posture. Try applying Tiger Balm.

This may sound really strange but try putting a bar of soap under your mattress where your neck is. It also works if you have leg or ankle cramps. I don't know why but it works.

Personally and professionally, I would go see a chiropractor, this is one of their specialties, it's cheaper and safer than drugs.
