Yes it is, it depresses your central nervous system the same way anti anxiety drugs do. As with Xanax, Valium, and Klonopin, alcohol is very physicaly addictive and can cause a very severe withdrawal. It uses the same chemicals in your brain that the anti anxiety drugs do and when you quit your brain doesnt make enough any more. So you would be then have worse anxiety and be at risk for sezuire.

it's not an anti anxiety drug... it's a depressive which numbs the senses... so it's not exactly stopping or inhibiting the chemical process that is anxiety or nervousness... it's numbing you so you don't feel it. kind of like if you have a bug bite that itches so bad it's driving your crazy so you pinch it really hard to numb it for a few minutes... the bug bite and itch is still there, you've just covered it up temporarily.
that may sound like a good way to get rid of anxiety but it's actually a really bad idea. anxiety is the result of a "fight or flight" chemical reaction in your nervous cells. to control this you need to control it at the cellular level (with reuptake inhibitors). using alcohol is a temporary fix that will actually mess up the chemical reaction for healthy nervous cell function even more.
if you're shy to the point that you don't feel comfortable even talking to people without alcohol you may have some kind of social anxiety disorder, which is easy to remedy, just talk to your doctor or a therapist.
if it's a minor thing i wouldn't worry about it, i always get super chatty after a glass of wine, just keep an eye on it to make sure you are DEPENDING on the alcohol to help you open up. if you find it's becoming a problem (like you won't even go out at all with your friends unless you know you're going somewhere with alcohol) then you might want to get some help.
good luck.

I do, at least for myself.
Alcohol seems to make me more passive, less aggressive, and much less tense. It also puts me in a state of "I don't give a f*ck" which helps me relax when at home and having to endure Mr. EarthQuake and his Construction Crew downstairs every night.
Alcohol has different effects on different people; some will become more violent and abusive, while others will be more relaxed. It all depends on the person.
Cheers!

I am so happy, it was only a 35 minute drive ( 70 minutes total) but absolutely no sign of anxiety or panic i shopped till I dropped - brilliant! I will now go for the next stage DUAL CARRIAGE way, probably at the weekend, with my husband accompanying me first then the solo drive, if successful the final stage of driving on motorway

Alcohol takes away your inhibitions. That is sometimes ok, like one drink before a first date. But 7 glasses of champagne at a wedding to loosen up is a bad idea! You can be really stupid when you drink too much. At the time, you may think you are being fun and crazy, but you are really being a jackass!

Alcohol is a depressant and to drink it to give you confidence is a very dangerous path to be walking.

Yes it is. Alcohol is very unique because it can make a depressed person happy, a happy person can get sad. a happy person can get happier and a depressed person can become suicidal. Its about the biological pathways in your body leading to chemical reactions that alter mood. I think one or two beers can chill you out. anymore and abuse will make you worse.
