That's how I see it spelled in many emails from colleagues in Argentina and Peru. Is this a common mispelling or is it an accepted way to spell "Septiembre"? I'm kind of puzzled.

I wasn't aware of this, but according to the Royal Spanish Academy (the Spanish language authority) "setiembre" IS an acceptable word for the month of September.

Apparently it is used in some countries of South America. I should warn you that it is not a common word in all countries of Latin America. For example, in Mexico, we only use "septiembre".

NOTE: It is not a matter of personal experience or opinion. Unlike the English language, where usage determines if a word is appropriate, a word in Spanish is considered standard only if is recognized so by The Royal Spanish Academy.

Before reading some answers here, I would have definetely said that "Setiembre" is a misspelling, and only Septiembre is correct.

But now, if they say it's used in Argentina and the Spanish Language Acadamy accept it, then it might be allright (though it really looks weird...)

as far as I know its septiembre in every spanish country I know of. Setiembre is the short/lazy version for Brazilians/argentinians.
It def shouldn't be used in business emails. I Know that much.

The correct spelling is septiembre, I dunno in some other parts, I had never seen that other spelling. People in other countries have accents that make them omit some letters when speaking, and this may lead to strange spellings, but no, the right one is septiembre.

I just read that it is correct to write setiembre, though in Mexico we only use Septiembre.

Brazilians? Helloooooo, Brazilians speak Portuguese! In Portuguese it's Setembro. And that goes for Portugal too.

It is the correct spelling for the word. This is basic high school Spanish.

probably a mispelling, although it's only natural that over time south american countries will have adapted differently to the language - a spanish person and a south american person (bar brazillians) will still be able to communicate though
