There is a religion that stated as fact that matter & energy are the same thing. It is not a bible based religion and most people have never heard of it unless they live in India.
But, they did and do teach that matter & energy are the same thing. And have done so for nearly 3,000 years.

I'm not suggesting they developed advanced mathematics, I'm suggesting they stated as fact that matter & energy are interchangeable. The didn't do the mathematics, they proposed the original idea that led to the mathematics.

The answer is Jainism:
"Matter and energy were known by Jains to have been interchangeable long before Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity."

I guess religions could claim to prove some pre-notive concept of matter/energy equivalence but i don't think they "explained" the theory of relativity. Seeing as how this theory does a whole lot more than get across the e=mc^2 equation, I don't think any religion has explained what was at the time genuine, creative, innovative work on the mechanics of mass, energy, and relativistic frames of reference.

Judaism.... Pslam 90 verse 4:
"A thousand years, before Thee, are like yesterday which was gone or like a vigil in the night."
A brief clarification before that, though. Back in Moses' time, day and night were distinct phenomena; it was not known that one was the continuation of the other. Therefore, the day corresponded to twelve hours (this time measurement in hours came centuries later). On the other hand, night was broken down into three equal parts—each corresponding to a watch, that is, four hours. Therefore, the verses can be read thus:
"A thousand years before Thee are like 12 hours or like 4 hours."
God spoke and matter and light came into existence. (Genesis 1:1, 1:3; John 1:1, 1:3)
If you will, God is energy, and from energy He created matter. Einstein determined that matter and energy are interchangeable, and of course they are subject to the laws of thermodynamics.
God is the source of energy within our closed system referred to as the Universe. God, however, is infinite and without bound in time and space. The creation is bound by both time and space, both of which are created, and has a finite amount of energy. (Ecclesiastes 1)
God exists in the creation, but also outside the creation and is not bound by time or space as we understand it. (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
God not only created the universe (Colossians 1:16), but also holds it together, even at the atomic level! (Colossians 1:17)

The one with big bang.
Psalm 19 1 The heavens tell of the glory of God. The skies display his marvelous craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or a word; their voice is silent in the skies; yet their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to all the world. The sun lives in the heavens where God placed it.

People have seen precursors of it in Christian and Buddhist writings.
But I'm not sure the question is useful.
It's like asking who saved more souls, Edison or Einstein.
Different areas of study.

Not sure. Einstein is great, amazing etc but many of his theories are wrong and still being used in textbooks due to the laziness and non progressiveness.
Tesla should not be over looked.
I may be wrong but I think Islam is the answer.

My Buddhist friends believe that energy (the whole universal "web") can exist as a "force" or on its own, or as matter.
