I think we should "force" people to learn the language. How? By NOT catering to those that don't know how to speak it. No government forms in 20 different languages, no translators if someone doesn't know how to communicate with the DMV, no more trying to do normal activities of daily living in the community and expect others to try and speak other languages besides English. . .
It would do two things; one would be saving money for the form printing and people that are needed to "translate", and two, it would make it less appealing for those that choose to immigrate here illegally.
Other countries in the world have an "official" language; why can't the United States?

English is not a requirement now nor was it ever when it came to immigrating into the US. Only US Citizens are required to learn the language. Your ancestors didn't need to learn it after arriving on Ellis Island, nor should anyone else unless they wish to become a citizen.
Volleyballchick, the reason we do not have an official language is because this is a country of immigrants. This isn't like France or Germany that have always been around. The US was created by people from all over the world who brought their ideas and languages along with them. The only reason English is used the most is because of British Rule during the original colonization era. Nearly everyone spoke it so it kinda stuck.

Lets see... Most people who want English as an official language are Republicans (nothing wrong with that, it is what it is). Most Republicans believe in the free market. People who like free markets should not support the adoption of an official language for the following reasons.
1. The "invisible hand" will take care of it. English is the lingual franca in most of the U.S. Hence, it makes economic sense to speak English. In other words, there is no reason to force people to speak any language.
2. The existence of non-English markets provides advantages to businesses that position themselves well
3. If you don't want to sing an anthem in Spanish, you don't have to.
For a long time, most Republicans and Democrats have been smart enough to realize that the idea of an official language is not a good idea.

Just as a note, lots of countries have two official languages. Canada, for example, has English and French. There are plenty of people there who speak only one or the other. Doesn't hurt anyone, really.
In principle, yes, I agree with you. People should be able to speak at least some English if they're going to live here. In reality, you can't *force* everyone to learn a new language.

America has no official language. It would be easier for an immigrant since English is most prevalent. Christopher Columbus was Italian commissioned by Spain to find a shorter route to Asia (India). The Viking Leif Ericsson actually was here before Columbus. And the Native Americans were here before that, and they possibly were nomads who crossed from Asia on the Bering Strait. Should the English immigrants have learned one of these languages?
Oops..am I supposed to answer a question with a question?

About the national anthem yes I agree....it should not be sang in Spanish! However, we need to be a little more understanding re: new immigrants because our ancestors were all imigints at one time and many spoke other languages.
When I go to MExico, they do speak English to me. They have learned english so they can work at businesses that cator to tourist.

We need to make English our national language. Then we'll have much better standing to implement exactly what you're saying, which which I sort of agree, however I think get out of our country is a little harsh. How about try learning our language, because that's the only language all the phone menus, signs, etc, will be in.

If this is America shouldn't we speak our own language...American???? Why should we speak an oppressive language that comes from a country we had a war against to gain our INDEPENDENCE???? People should speak whatever language they wish. Have you ever been to Europe...where most Western languages originated from??? The majority of Europeans are at least BILINGUAL...speaking other languages is a benefit, not a detractor.

I haven't heard of them trying to get our national anthem sung in spanish, but I have heard that down in Texas they are trying to make it a law that school officials need to be bilingual so that the lil mexican kids don't need to learn English. If this country ever gets that bad, I'm going to call on all TRUE American citizens to join me in the war against the invaders, starting with declaring war against their home country. In order to destroy ants, you don't kill them one by one, you drop a bomb into the nest to kill the queen and as many as you can all at once.
