I know this guy who joined the Marines and he was saying how much better the Marines were than the Army(my boyfriend's in the army)

and that how much harder his bootcamp will be than what my boyfriend went through. I told him that each branch was different so the boot camps are different. He still doesn't see it that way.

Every service looks down on the other for the same reasons that people say their team is better than the others. It is really stupid but they do. The one good thing though is that if one gets in trouble the others are ready and willing to go to their defense.

Yes each branch looks down on the other branches. However marines are different they are in the navy whether they like to admit it or not. As such we in the navy have the right to dis the marines like any big brother does there little brother. If anyone else disses a marine it's a sure bet a sailor will defend the marine as he is family black sheep for sure but family none the less. The army doesn't have the esprit d'corp like the marines nor is the army as resourceful with marines it's adapt and over come, with the army it's where's my back up and my supplies? The air force there just too wussy to mention misspent tax dollars that what they are better spent on the navy and marine air forces not those land based wusses!

Yes, this also is unfortunately true for the most part. It's like a stereotype. My hubby gets a little defensive about it with what military branch is better than the other and, whose job in that branch is toughter and more glorious than the other, and it upsets me. So, I always mention to him this ->: I know a Marine who has the same attitude as me: The whole military force is like an organism, we may be sepparate in our own jobs (heart, lungs, liver, intestines, etc.) but we all work together as one. Someone has to make the trash and someone else has to take out the trash. Like my dad always says, "there's and @ss for every seat"! Branches do differant jobs from the other, so training is differant, but it doesn't mean a person doesn't train just because they didn't choose the hardest one. They all fight for the same reason, patriotism and the right for freadom. This marine dude you are talking about obviously never went through Army Officer Candidate School. The OCS training was harder and longer (14 weeks, 23 weeks if you count BCT and OCS back to back like my hubby did.) than Marine Boot Camp (6 to 9 weeks). So maybe he should put that in his egotistical pipe of testosterone and small d!ck and smoke it! GO USA!

in my experience, everyone has their branch that they really don't think is useful. Generalizing accross the board, commonly:

AF types think the navy is outmoded
The navy doesn't like the marines b/c marines don't come off as sophisticated as the navy
the marines can't stand the army because the marines think they're tougher and more combat effective
And the army doesn't like the AF because we get lots of money.

At the same time, alot of these rivalries are not taken too seriously. Most of the time we're joking around and having a good time. (btw, the slang terms used in the answers before this are NOT approved for civilian use). yes, we're proud of our service, but we also understand that victory in war is more dependant now than ever on joint operations accross full spectrum mediums. Oh, and tell this marine recruit that if he hasn't been to basic that he doesn't count and no one really cares how hard he THINKS his training will be.

A lot of it has to do with what each branch is exposed to. I believe media plays a big role as well. Marines think they are the best because they go through a tough training while air force think they are the smartest because you "have to be smart" to get in (or so I've heard) and it goes on with each branch. In the end, I love being in the Navy and wouldn't trade it for anything else.

I wouldn't call it "looking down" on other branches. There's just a healthy rivalry. We all make cracks at each other. We also know that really, no branch can exist without the other. Marines are hard core though. Many of them believe they are the best. It's instilled in them.

One of the biggest rivalries in college football is the Army-Navy game.

Goooo Army!!

My husband was in the Marines before he switched to the Army He never said anything about the other branches but when he came here he said that the Army is easier and more lienant in some ways. The only other thing is he jokes about the Navy being gay (no offense to the Navy I know theres some Navy wives on here that would give me an earfull right now!)

The Marines are the hardest and longest bootcamp in the service, (I leave in october!). They are buy all means the best. If you don't want to see combat, go to the Navy. The army is bodys... saftey in numbers, (and most...not all, of them are fat and lazy) The Airforce is smart with their money, they invest in good housing and stuff for the familys. The Marines are known for saving everyone else and getting the job done when none of the branches above could do it. The Army doesn't gaurd the president of the U.S. I come from a family of marines, incase you couldn't tell! My husband is a ssgt. who has seen combat, he builds the 54s engines... but he volunteered for combat missions and he has been every where.

It's just good-old joking around. There are some people in every service who really do think their service is better, but for the most part, it's like a jovial high school rivalry.

there is a rivalry between the services. the army are called ground pounders, marines are called grunts, air force are called zoomies or the air farce, the navy are called squids. it is drilled into the that each service is the best. there is even a rivalry between surface sailors and submarine sailors who are called bubble heads. every one thinks there's is the best. but in the end the all work for the same reason.
