Many--not all--but a good number of psychics are fakes. Anyone can "read" palms (or cards or tea leaves), it just takes practice. What they are reading is not the prop they are using, it's your body language. It's called cold reading, and it's very easy to learn.

In cold reading, they ask a few leading questions that sound innocent enough, but they they watch your reactions and consider your responses to these questions. For example, if I were to casually ask why you came to see me today, your answer could give me a lot of information to play off of, especially if you are honest (and if you believe me to be a real psychic, why wouldn't you be?). Even if you decided to lie to me, I might be able to pick that up through your body language.

So, I make a few lucky guesses (and cover the misses) and pretty soon, you begin to believe in my power. Now it's time to start throwing bait to you. I start to make statements that sound like I'm giving you information, but what I'm actually doing is trying to get you to elaborate on a subject. This is called prompting.

For example, I might say, "The cards are saying something about a month beginning with a "J." January, perhaps? Or maybe June?"

Now, just as I'd hoped, you mention that your next evaluation at work comes up in June. "Of course," I respond, "I see that now."

And I go on to tell you what you want to hear, that you will receive high marks on your evaluation and will probably get a raise. How do I know? You're well-dressed and well-groomed, you present yourself well. I can make an educated guess that you have high work standards and will probably get a good evaluation.

Or maybe you tell me that you're looking at buying a house and expect to foreclose in July. When you mention it, you frown slightly, so I hazard a guess. "Your wife, she is driving the bargain? Yes?"

If you agree, I will go on to tell you that you should beware the deal. I don't know whether you will actually get the house or not, so I need to be more vague. Instead of trying to tell you that you won't get it, I tell you what you want to hear. Even if I'm wrong about your wife or girlfriend driving the deal, I can still cover by making it sound like the cards (or whatever) have suddenly shown me something terribly dire.

"You must NOT close the deal on that house! If you do, you will suffer a financial loss within the year!"

Many psychics use cold reading to help them hook a client and draw them in, which is why a lot of psychics have to display somewhere on the premesis that their reading is for entertainment value only.

Now, that said, there are a few psychics out there who do have some kind of gift. I've known two people who convinced me. One actually saw me in a crowd and told me something about myself that she had no way of knowing (I'd never met her in my life). This interested me and we had a long conversation (she didn't request payment, which helped to convince me) about things she had no knowledge of.

The other individual was impressive simply because I fed her no clues or information. I'm pretty good at spotting a cold reader, and if I think they are trying to bilk me, I will take them down. She was wrong on a few counts, but for the most part, she was pretty close, so either she made some lucky guesses, or else she has the gift.

A psychic will tell you what you want to hear - God will tell you the truth. But only if you ask him (through prayer).
My ex-boyfriend went to a psychic after we broke up and the psy. told him that my next boyfriend is going to be a very abusive man and I'll be in living hell. Well, I married that next boyfriend, we now have 2 children + one on the way. And he has introduced me to God. He didn't "make" me believe, but his way of living and his experiences made me believe. I think the only person in the world my husband would be physically abusive to is my ex-boyfriend!
So much about the "truth" you'll find at a psychic's office!
You'll only find THE truth if you put your faith in God. And He can do way more with your money than the psy. ever could!

It's a waste of your money. Psychics tend to use a method known as "cold reading" -- putting out a number of vague suggestions and only expanding on those to which you yourself feed them information to make things seem "psychic." They depend on something known as the "Forer effect," which is a proven bias that almost everyone has to interpret vague statements as being overly accurate and true about oneself.

The Bible strongly condemns the practice of spiritism, mediums, occult, psychics, etc. (Leviticus 20:27; Deuteronomy 18:10-13). Horoscopes, tarot cards, astrology, fortune tellers, palm readings, séances, etc., fall into this category as well. These practices are based on the concept that there are gods, spirits, or deceased loved ones that can give you advise and guidance. These “gods” or “spirits” are demons (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). The Bible gives us no reason to believe that deceased loved ones can, or would even want to contact us. If they were believers, they are in heaven, enjoying the most wonderful place imaginable – in fellowship with a loving God. If they were not believers, they are in hell, suffering the un-ending torment for rejecting God’s love and rebelling against Him.

Satan pretends to be kind and helpful. He tries to appear as something good. Satan and his demons will give a psychic information about a person, in order to get that person hooked into spiritism – something that God forbids. It appears innocent at first, but soon a person finds themselves addicted to psychics – allowing Satan to control and destroy their life. 1 Peter 5:8 proclaims, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." In most cases, the psychics themselves are likely deceived, not knowing the true source of the information they receive. Whatever the case, and wherever the source of the information – nothing connected to spiritism, witchcraft, astrology, etc. is God’s intention for us as a means to discover information. How does God want us to discern His will for our life? Simple: (1) Study the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17), (2) Pray for wisdom (James 1:5).

If a pychic tells you that you are cursed / hexed and for $400+ dollars they can reverse the hex - its a scam. For other scams see below.

I believe in enlightened psychics but would only visit one if referred by world of mouth and built trust in that person - there is a difference between a medium and a gypsy - know the difference.

Well, just know that fakes are good at feeding off your reaction. They can throw out something vague enough that you find your own meaning in it and go from there.

I think they are more for fun than getting real info, but sometimes you find someone who seems to have something. More so, I think the experience just helps you think through things for yourself.

Well, you could write down the psychic's predictions and see if they come true.

You will not get the truth b/c they do not know it. Only God knows what the future holds, anyone else is just guessing.
