How does gender stereo-typing in play affect children?

Years ago the CBC children's show "Mr. Dressup" had an episode where one of the guests sang a song about a boy who wanted a doll, and everybody ridiculed the boy for that choice. But one of the characters in the song made an interesting point: the boy would one day become a father, and if there was ever a time when the boy would need to learn even the basics of parenthood, now was the time to begin.

As for girls playing with trucks, it may have seemed unusual once upon a time, but with more and more women getting into jobs that were once considered men-only jobs, such as construction work or firefighting, such a move sends the message that women can do any job that men can.

My daughter loves trucks and cars and all the boy stuff, she also likes the babies and barbies and all the girl stuff. I personally don't think there is nothing wrong with a boy that plays with a doll yeah he might get made fun off but it is also letting him explore his sensitive side also. It also depends on the mind set of the child and you, can you take a little criticism for it and if he is still to young to understand then no harm, just let him play with it in the house.

Sometimes it doesnt affect them much at all. Sometimes it does. Most little kids don't really care what they play with, but once they get to school-age they start wanting to play with what their friends play with. Letting a girl play with trucks or a play tool set shows her that she can be more than just a cook and Mommy. Dolls teach boys a little about babies and being a Daddy. As long as no one is playing Doctor, though, you should be all good.

Let us consider this from a rational and logical aspect. Is it not the reality that little boys progress into adult males that have or may become boyfriends, fathers, and husbands? It is a fact that through toys that girls are given dolls in play in order to prepare them as girlfriends, wives, and mothers. It is acceptable behavior by society. Why deny the boys dolls that can be used to instruct them in the correct way to treat their girlfriends, wives, and children? Expectant fathers are given baby dolls to practice on in birthing classes. That is hypocritical. They as little boys are told by toy companies, parents, and others that only girls or unmasculine males play with dolls. This results in gender identity confusion. I have heard little girls told by adults that the toy aisles that include action figures, Hot Wheels, Matchbox, robots, and such items are for boys and not girls. Do little girls not also progress into adult females that either own or drive automobiles; date or marry military men; and work in the field of science? Does it therefore not seem obsurd to deny them those types of toys as little girls? Giving a little girl dolls does not mean they will be good mothers. Some women who had been given baby dolls as little girls have become women that murdered their own babies. Common sense is neglected by traditional methods of child rearing when it comes to this topic. With me being a prime example, the fact is that having dolls at no time made me desire to be of the female gender nor as a result become a homowsexual. To assume that giving a toy will bring about those results, is not an exact consequence. The toy by itself is powerless. Only when it is accompanied by the words or deeds of others does the toy matter in the mind of the child.

The benefits are that you'll have a happy kid because you don't restrict the kind of toys they are play with! Gender stereo-types effect children by making them feel strange if they want to play with a non-stereo typical toy. They restrict boys into one category and girls into another and by doing so reinforce the notion that they CAN'T be who they want to be -- they have to bend to society's expectations. This is very unhealthy for kids and will usually lead to low self esteem.

Well I guess it will help them fit in better in kindergarten to play with the gender stereotyped toys. I think a little boy playing with dolls would get teased by his peers. Not there's anything wrong with boys playing with dolls though.

My little nephew performs with trucks and his sister's crammed animals and that is totally candy. i think of that is coaching him the thank you to be empathetic and loving. whether, I believe the poster above me. I used to coach preschool while i grew to become into in college and it looked the ladies will certainly gravitate in direction of the dolls and the "abode" issues on an identical time as the boys would pass to the trucks or the different louder, rougher issues.

My son was in love with Barbie dolls, Little Mermaid toys, My little Ponies and dress up clothes from the time that he was about 4 years old.
I was not at all surprised when he was 19 and "came out of the closet".
Would he have been straight if I had forbidden him to play with "girl toys"?
Somehow I doubt it.
Would have been able to live his life as a normal, outgoing, happy, gay man today?
Probably not.
Let children develop as they will and accept them for who they are.
