I am disgusted with these avian vets and people who recomend them. I bought a baby budgie, and the lady broke something in his leg when she clipped his wings. I want to fix it, my preference is to help my bird, but i don't have money for x-rays and what not. Even if I did... I wouldnt pay it. These avian vets are fixing broken limbs on birds not curing cancer. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to fix it. I only found one site online with actual directions on fixing broken limbs on birds. Some people rescue birds from cats or starvation because their owners just left them to die... they should'nt be stuck with the bill for trying to help. there should be a site with detailed instructions on fixing things like this. So that people can still help the animal regaurdless of their financial situation.

Avian vets are in an exclusive field. Not many vets choose this specialty because the repeat business is limited. Dogs and cats usually go outside and are exposed to other animals so are therefore more likely to contract various illnesses. Birds, on the other hand, usually live in a contained environment so they get sick or injured less often. Without that repeat business, there's less money in it for the vets so they have to charge more per visit. Also, bird physiology is quite different from mammals so it requires specialized training for the vets.

That being said, here are some instructions for setting the bird's leg yourself:
Cut two pieces of cloth adhesive tape, align the bones as well as possible and place one piece of tape on one side and the other piece opposite. Squeeze the tapes together down each side of the tape with forceps, as close to the bone as possible, and then cut the tape close to leg, maybe 1/16". After this, run a bead of 'super glue' down both seams and let dry. The super glue holds the edges together and also strengthens the tape.

actully I don't think my avain vet is that expensive, when a trip with meds costs around the $50 to $60 range, while a dog's yearly check up with vacinations is around $100 to $150. Besides you have decided to take on an animal as a pet which includes proper care and treatment.

Why are you mad at the vets? was it one of them that did the damage? Or a pet shop worker?

A quick help for now (while to try to work out cash) is egg white, brush it over the leg and it dries hard, toothpicks and matchsticks can be used as splints if needed.

Talk to the vets many are willing to work out a payment option if asked, they did of cuase become a vet to start with to hep animals. If it was the pet shop that did the clip and damage then return and tell them, most have a 'health' period where they either fix the issue or swap the animal.

who is the lady that broke your budgie's leg? shouldnt she pay for the bill?

Generally avian vets are expensive because they are working on an animal that is smaller than most pets. its internal make-up is very sensitive and elaborate and on a much smaller scale than cats or dogs. it may not be rocket science to heal a broken limb, but like all broken bones, you do have x-rays done and what not. these things are costly. you may not pay it if you were to break your leg, but your insurance does. birds dont usually have insurances on them so you see the entire cost.

you pay for the bill because you love your bird and you consider it a part of your family, whether its a budgie or a macaw. if you are not able to pay for it, then you should reconsider being an owner of any animal. they need utmost care mentally and physically like any other living thing.

Avian Vets are so expensive because it is a "Specialty Field" of vetrinary medicine. Birds' bones are very fragile because they are hollow and need extra caution when working on them. I understand your frustration about the cost, but to have this poor bird's leg fixed, it needs to be seen by an avian Vet.
If you try to fix the leg yourself, you could actually kill the bird.

FIRST AVAIN VETS ARE FAR AND FEW BETWEEN. THERE ARE NONE IN WEST KANSAS AND THE CLOSEST IS ABOUT 7 HOURS AWAY. SECOND OTHER VETS WON'T NORMALLY SEE BIRDS AS THEY ARE VERY DELICATE WHEN IT COMES TO INJURIES. MY AVAIN VET WAS REASONABLY PRICED AND OUT OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
