Marcel Romano, a shadowy hipster on the French jazz scene who coordinated all six of the soundtracks, knew both the New Wave directors and the jazz musicians who either lived in or came through Paris. So when Louis Malle asked Mr. Romano to prepare a soundtrack for his first movie, the 1958 ''Ascenseur pour l'echafaud'' (''Elevator to the Gallows''), Mr. Romano went directly to jazz musicians, among them Miles Davis, for help.
