Dunno how you would do it on your system but the best "on hold" music I ever heard was when I had to phone United States Airforces Sembach, in Germany, they had Metallica as their on hold music.

I guess it was a feed from some radio station that was linked into the phone system

The music selected should reflect what kind of business you are in. If your company is more professional like a lawyer, doctor, real estate, etc then I would suggest classical or light jazz. If it is more youth oriented...catering to teens and college age, rock music would be a good choice. You can also stream a radio station of the types of music mentioned. The hold music I find most annoying is the kind where they have music and "catch phrases"/messages about the company mixed together. Although I do have to admit it is better than the beeping.

there is a way to "stream" your favourite radio station as holding music. Thats pretty decent.
