It is valid to show common courtesy and respect when you have to leave unexpectedly and become a distraction to others in church.

I haven't seen this at our church, but it may mean "Lift High the Cross." I do see people do that when they sing that hymn. I personally am not into that kind of thing, makes me feel stupid.
