He is already cruising furniture but doesn't seem to want to take that leap to standing on his own. Is there anything I can do to encourage him?

a bit old, but not grossly unusual. he falls on one end of the bell curve. just encourage walking by taking his hands and "exercising" the walk. pretty soon, your problem will be catching up with him.

My 23 yr old didn't walk until he was about 15 months. It bothered others more than me because the dr. said don't worry, he will when he is ready. One day he just did it. I was lucky enough to get pics of it with his diaper hanging off and everything. Now he is a Marine so it didn't hurt him any. Dr. said the kid knew I'd put him down as soon as he could walk so he didn't want to. A walker is great for freedom for both of you, but don't stress over it. People even suggested I try bribing him with candy, etc. Ignore the suggestions and just hang in there.

Nope, especially a boy. I chose not to walk til I was 17 months. Just didn't see the point to walking when crawling was good enough.

Also, gotta warn ya that once he starts walking, you will wish for something else because boys get into EVERYTHING once they start walking. No amount of haranging will stop him. Just ask your mother in-law about your husband or ask your mother about your brothers.

Potty training will seem to take forever with a boy as well. Just be patient. Boys are just slower.

HE's Fine. Every child does everthing differently. like sleeping all night, potty training, eating with a spoon, etc. etc. Consider yourself lucky for now, cause when he starts walking soon after he's going to start running. Have fun and enjoy him. My son didnt start walking until about 14 months. and hes perfectly health and active

No. All children develop differently. Put him around children that walk to stimulate him. And don't keep picking him up for every little thing. Sounds like an only child without other children around.

You could work with him, But i wouldn't worry about it. Everyone learns at different paces. My 8mo old can't sit up or crawl yet, but she appears to be doing unusually well mentally. I'm sure your kiddo will be fine. Try not to compare his progress with other children's. It can be damaging for both of you if you accidentally make a habit of it.

Boys usually take longer to walk. Get an activity walker for him to walk behind while he pushes...some kids really like those to get around. They practice walking but still have something to hold onto.

(try http://www.toysrus.com and type activity walker in the search box)

Is it a first child? Sometimes the first children learn to walk/talk slower than their younger siblings. I wouldnt worry about it, he'll catch on!

no it is not unusual. some kids walk even later than that, my son started walking at 2 yrs, you could hold his hands and try to make him walk , also could massage his legs so they become stronger
