If it wasn't for "victimless" crimes (i.e.: drugs, prostitution, seat belts) and the cops only protected the innocent from the corrupt, and didn't try to "save us from ourselves" (i.e. drug use/possession/trafficking) then they would be AWESOME, until then they are PIGS. Even so, they are just doing their jobs and trying to put food on the table

It's because the US and UK legal consititutions are largely based on prosecution of victimless crimes, so one has to be an authoritarian, authority-unquestioning dimwit and a bully in order to do the job according to establishment expectation. You get a few decent, liberal-minded cops, but not many. Since the establishment is rife with totalitarian corruption, the bastards we have making up the larger number of the police force are the type of people they're going to recruit.

It seems to me that the only people that have a major problem with the police are the ones that are always getting in trouble with the police....wonder why? As a Criminal Justice major, we need police officers, just like we need a military, just like we need every other member of our armed services. True..some cops do need a get into another line of work, but for the most part cops do their job and they deserve more respect then what people give them. As to the part about sending cops to prison, that seems to be everyone answer to everything, "send them to prison" aren't taxes high enough as it is??? Don't people realize that the more people we stuff into prison, the more that WE have to pay to keep them in there. I do believe that a minimum of a 4 year college degree should be required for all police officers instead of just a high school diploma, that would weed out the so called bad apples right there. If I were a cop making less then $40,000 a year and I had to put up with trash everyday on the job, I would probably have a bit of a bad attitude also, cops cant afford to be nice and polite all the time, they are putting their lives on the line everyday, people sure do not mind calling them when they need help do they??

How many police officers have you actually met? It seems to me that, like any human organisation, there are good guys and bad guys. I like in a low-income neighbourhood and the police don't do much for us, but I don't think that makes them scum of the earth, evil and it definitely makes them human.
I don't know where you live, but the police here receive all that training. You're right, they do become the worst sort of criminal when they lie or subvert your Constitution, which I imagine they are sworn to uphold. But surely they don't do this as an organisation? You must have had some bad experiences with police officers to have come to these feelings. I imagine the system does deal in some way and harshly with "bad, lying police", but that won't keep the dishonest honest. Remember, criminals, whether or not they have a uniform, dn't think they are going to get caught. Sentences and fear of punishment don't deter crime, if it did, your country wouldn't need to keep building prisons (particularly for young Black men.)
I think most police officers do respect citizens, they are citizens themselves for most of the day. Police are not supposed to be "our servants". They are servants to society; they are officers of the court, and they serve the Law, not citizens. Police should not be punishers, you are right. They should apprehend and detain alleged criminals and bring them to court to be either convicted or released, and then sentenced. A police officer should never be the one to dole out punishment. But police officers are as human as the rest of us, and sometimes react inappropriately to inappropriate people/actions. Each of these cases should be judged on its own, by an independent and capable judiciary. If this is not the case in your area, lobby for it. If you have a problem with a particular officer/officers, make a complaint. Stand for yourself and your Constitution, and keep that officer honest.
best of luck, please try to keep your mind open and your heart strong

I do agree that some Police Officers are corrupt, but that's no reason to label them all, as scum of the Earth, Evil and Inhuman.
This Country is full of many Police Officers who really do serve and protect!
I would think that a person who has such a negative feeling on all Police Officers, can't be a real Law Abiding Citizen. You must have done something really bad, if you were treated so wrong by them.

not all police are scum of the earth, evil or inhuman. you would be surprised of the courses the police have to take. the police are there to "serve and protect" not be a servant. in most circumstances, whatever your problem with the police is did not come from first hand happenings. chances are that you heard things from someone and it is not the complete truth. unless you were there first hand, i would only believe half of what you heard. I am not saying that all police are on the level. There are some that are bad and that gives all the others a bad name too. It's not that easy to prove anything about anyone regardless of what they do for a living.

To be fair, there ARE good cops out there. But, sometimes it can be very hard to find them.
The reason so many police are corrupt or evil these days is... well, think about it: being a cop is basically a public license to be paid to bully other people, in a job that, because it's a civil service job, is very easy to get entrenched in, and hard to be fired from.
Think about the kind of person who would want the job of a cop. Either they're VERY altruistic, or they have the need to control other people with force. Unfortunately, the latter is the more common case, especially nowadays since our values as a population have become so confused.
Eventually, cops see so much of the negative side of life, that they ofen fall into the "it's us versus the world" trap of thinking, and that can enflame their already heightened sense of paranoia.
And, many of them simply like to abuse other, often weaker people, and get paid for it!

Once someone puts on a police uniform in whatever country they are in they think they are above the law and can do anything and get away with it and it is a sad indictment of so called democracy that in Britain and America and no doubt most other so called civilized countries they can. If you are a police officer in Britain you can legally run some one down and kill them in a police car or even in a private vehicle and you get promoted and a free holiday,or shoot an unarmed person and become a hero in the eyes of the police and government.

If someone physically hurts you or breaks into your house, who would be there to help you? If you had an accident in your car and was unable to free yourself, who would be there to help you? So, here is what I am thinking, you have never been a victim of someone else's and needed help. You have been a victim of a cop who wronged you and if that is the case, I am sorry. Or, you are a law breaker and got caught, now you are pissed off and think you should blame the cops for it because God for bid, you hold yourself accountable. Think about this, in a beautiful green field there are sheep grazing. There is a sheep dog watching the sheep. Granted, the sheep hate the sheep dog. But when the wolf comes to the field to eat the sheep, the sheep dog is there to defend them from harm and keep them safe. And what's more, the sheep dog will run towards the danger while the sheep run away. Think about that when you generalize cops as "scum of the Earth."

I agree with the "just pay the ticket" comment but I also think that the combination of the low lives police generally have to deal with coupled with police department's predisposition for hiring ex-high school football players, former enlistedd men in the military and wannabe cowboys leads to a pretty bad image.
My wife used to work for the local police department and they really do have quite a bit of independence. They decide where they want to drive, when they want to eat which plates to run and so forth. Perhaps a little more control might remedy the situation.
