Many parents keep saying kids should be grateful to their parents because they nurture their kids, give them shelter, a bed, take care of their health, pay for their school, etc. This is true, but it's also true no one asks to be born, so parents have a moral obligation to do such things. I think good parents should be more worried about their beings than about being praised for what is their duty. If someone thinks raising kids is a nuisance, then he or she shouldn't have kids at all. You should have kids if what you want to love them, and not to be praised for raising them.
Some parents also keep repeating that old saying 'while you live under my roof you have to follow my rules", implying they do their kids a favor and they should be their slaves. Again, such parents forget their kids never asked to be born. If you want to be despotic and all you want is your kids worshiping you, then you'd better not have kids.

Parents have several duties and responsibilities for their kids. Parents have a duty to love their kids and to take care of their needs. Parents are responsible for keeping their kids out of harms way. And parents are partly responsible for behavior of their kids in school and in public places.

And if parents are to fulfil their parental resposibilities at all, then they must have some control over the behavior of their kids. Of course, parents can't always follow their kids and make sure that they behave well. That's why parents demand respect for their rules. The rules are there to make sure that their kids behave well.

Kids often cannot judge well what is good and what is evil. That's why society makes parents responsible for the behavior of their kids. And that's why society gives parents the right to control and guide their kid's behavior.

Perhaps being grateful to your parents for being alive and for having your needs taken care of is something that needs to be learned. And parents are the ones who are responsible for teaching gratitude to their kids. Gratitude is not an instinct that comes naturally to people.

When kids are grateful to their parents, then it's a sign that these kids have been brought up well. And when kids are not grateful, then it's a sign that these kids have had a poor upbringing.

Sounds like someone is mad at their parents. "I never asked to be born!" How angst.

The fact is that while you live under your parent's roof, it is NOT a democracy. You are not their "slave", but so long as you do not work & earn the money that pays for all you own & take advantage of, you need to do what you are asked to do. I'll bet nobody has asked you to scrub the toilet with a toothbrush or fix the roof. Get over yourself. No, you didn't ask to be born but I'll venture to guess you're pretty happy you were so why not show them some appreciation?

It has nothing to do w/ "praise" and more to do with respect and appreciation. Learn that & stop whining about how unfair life is.

When your kids are teens, you will find yourself saying the exact same things your parents said to you. Your kids will then think you are a despot.

You can promise to the high heavens that you won't say the same things to your kids, but once you are there as a parent and you see what parents see (dangers, traps, etc) you will revert to your own parenting.

Sorry to tell ya' but you are a despot in the making.
