I live in Nassau County, Long Island. I'm 33 - overweight, out of shape, and I'm sick & tired of feeling like crap all the time. It's time to do something about it. Can anyone recommend a good gym for someone who has never really been on an exercise/workout routine before?...a place that maybe has special programs for beginners? I've never belonged to a gym before - but I know that different gyms cater to different clienteles (I wouldn't want to join Powerhouse, for example). I want to be able to go somewhere where I'm comfortable and also have a good plan set-up for me so I know what I'm doing....have a focus. I have a free-month trial at Synergy - but I don't know if that would be the right gym for me - so if anyone has specific experience with that gym, please comment.

Good for you!!! There is no time like the present to get in shape and the benefits are overwhelming. Try Synergy for 3 months and see if you like it. If you do, then your problems are solved. If you don't, just being around fitness people might steer you to a better gym. I personally like the "Y" because I can travel all around and use different facilities. I live in the Midwest and the "Y'S" are good here....I don't know about New York. You're in the same boat I was in a few years ago. There was a gym by me offering a free trial membership and it was the best thing I could have done. Go for it!!!

I love LA Fitness on 110 in Farmingdale. There's another in New Hyde Park I believe. They are great for beginners and it is overall a really nice place. I'm sure you can get a free trial there as well. You should probably try and pick a place that is close to either your home or your work. If your gym is too far, you might use that as an excuse not to go... I know I do! Also, look for a gym that will not only give you a free trial, but will give you at least one free session with a personal trainer who can show you what to do and how to do it. Try not to get into any long term commitments with money. LA Fitness is a pay by the month gym and will freeze your account if you can't make it for a few months (or more) in a row.

I personally like 24 Hour Fitness. Find out if they have a "Sport" gym in your area (as opposed to the regular 24-Hr Fitness), it would most likely have a swimming pool and some other cool amenities. Ask them about trainers and stuff to get you started. Also, if you sign up as a VIP member ($15 extra per month), you can bring a guest every time.

NY Sports club is good and cheap, about $65 per month, almost 1/2 the cost of similar places around me.
