you start with taking a little yourself, and exclaiming out loud how great it is... then you go lengths at explaining to your child, that under no circumstances he can try it until he is at least 5 (it's even better if there is an older child around, that he knows - don't forget to mention, that this other child is old enough, and can have all the robitussin he wants any time he fills like it)...
After that, it should be a couple of minutes or so, before your child starts begging you to let him try just a little bit of this stuff.

My kids HATE that stuff. We've been using it often lately. My 2 year old son usually responds if I offer him a candy. I tell him he can have the candy after he takes the medicine. I use the syringe that I used when he was an infant, or else it gets everywhere.
If he refuses, this sounds terrible but it works, then I lay him on his back and force it. I have to use the same syringe and I do a little at a time so he doesn't choke. I have to hold his body still, his hands down, and pinch his lips together (like a fish face) so he cant spit it out. Come to think of it I am not sure how to explain how I do all that by myself, so you might need help. LIke you said though, forcing is always last resort.
Adding to to whatever drink never worked for me because he isn't the kind of kid to down a cup full of anything much less if it has a "different" taste than what he is used to. Then I couldn't tell if he actually got enough to do any good.
I will definitely read the other suggestions though, because I hate having to do it this way when the candy doesn't work! In fact he is due for his next dose soon!

i used to mix it with Koolaid. Make sure you buy the same flavor. But don't tell your kid. Just give him a drink. If you act suspicious then they will know. But also you can go to the pharmacy and they will give you a syringe that you can use to force it. Also at the pharmacy you can get shots of flavoring added to any medication, that make it taste better. Let your kid pick a flavor and tell them that if they pick they have to take the medicine. Good luck

I laughed when I saw this! OHHHHHHH have I been in your shoes!
Wanna know my secret?!?!
I iffer a piece of candy. NO JOKE! I set it out on the counter & then dose out the med, tell him he can have the candy as soon as he swallows the medicine to ge tthe taste out of his mouth.
Another tip: Use the sringe type despenders rather than a spoon or cup. you can have him open his mouth & squirt it near the back...it works a lot better than waiting for him to drink it out of the cup/spoon.
BUT- the candy is still the best bet! Works like a magical charm here! Something small like an m&m, skittle, ect...

My friend a nurse told me that she would put it in a syringe and mix it with Chocolate syrup and then squirt it in his mouth.. I tried that with my son when he was taking some particuarly awful tasting medicine and it worked. He would get excited when he saw me getting his medicine ready..
