If you just want conversational skills, go with Berlitz. If you really want to learn the language so you can speak, write and read it, take a full college course.

Congratulations to you for not wanting to be a monolingual American! I wish more in our country shared your sentiments.

Are you talking about Berlitz language tapes/software, or the Berlitz Language Schools? I can say that it is ALWAYS better to take a class than to try to teach yourself. Language is about communication, and you will progress much faster if you actually use it with other people, especially with a teacher who can correct your mistakes. So I definitely wouldn't recommend the tapes/CD/software route.

I'm personally never taken a Berlitz class, but I believe they are expensive and intensive---geared toward people who want to learn fast and have the time to devote to it. If you don't have a lot of spare time and/or if price is a concern, I highly recommend taking classes at a local community college. They're usually quite cheap and taught by excellent teachers.

Good luck!

Berlitz is primarily for business travelers, who need to rapidly learn the conversational skills requried to get by in the country you are planning to visit. It does give someone the full understanding of the language - that is, the idiomatic phrases, conjugations, and all the grammatical things learned in a college course. If you want to speak a foreign language well, I suggest taking a college course, or by total immersion, living in that country for a semester. Good luck!

Berlitz is geared more for people who need to learn just enough to be a tourist who can ask where the bathroom is.

If you really want to learn the language, college.
