I have been told by several christians that an explination to why we don't live as long as people of the bible, and why we cannot reproduce with our relatives is because of genetic impurities introduced from the sin committed by adam and eve. Is this accurate?

This is difficult to pick a best answer because I have both yes and no answers but noone has been able to point to scripture or anything else that would suggest that I am not to have sex with my sister and why.

Yes indeed! Adam & Eve were created perfect. When they sinned we inherited imperfection. So, each generation descending from that first couple is even more imperfect.

As to the sin nature and the "degradation" of the genetic material, that might be one way of expressing the "Fall" and certainly genetic "impurities" can be more noticeable when there is marriage with close cousins, etc.
As for the longevity ... I suppose people after the Fall did not live as long as they would have if there hadn't been any Fall. Even after the Fall, people lived 465 to 969 years of age ... it seems after the Flood, lifespans were greatly shortened, like to about 120 years. Later still 70 became normal and 80 years was considered old, though a few did reach 100 or a bit over.
Only recently, with modern discoveries (medicine and other) has the average lifespan been increasing slightly.
So, yes, Adam and Eve were the first humans to live, the first humans to sin, and Abel was the first to die ... because Cain murdered him ... and that, too, was a result of the Fall and the fallen human nature.

I don't think so. I like the way this guy put it on another question.
bobm709: Actually the time line is only to 6-4000BC depending on certain Biblical time lines. Therefore I believe that would put Tubal-Cain some where close to the 3000BC time or so. In addition, Adam and Eve were made "very good" and one belief is that significant genetic degradation did not start happening until after Noah's flood. This leads to an assumption that those during that time, may have been smarter than we are now and knowledgeable of the practice and that maybe some of that knowledge was lost during the flood and slowly regained (since it was only Noah and his sons, it's doubtful they knew everything about all trades).

UPDATE: Bula'ia - to my knowledge we're not living much over 100. Back then they lived several 100 years.

No - Adam and Eve were evicted from the Garden of Eden and became mortal as punishment for transgressing the law. If this had not happened they would have lived eternally in innocence and never had children. As far as genetics, the more you inbreed the less diversity you will have, and the more likely you are to make undesirable traits dominant.

That's not true, if this was true then Methusalah wouldn't have been lived 969 years, no one knows why we can't live as long as they did back then. As for not being able to reproduce with our relatives is due to a genetic impurity that God introduced for there was sufficient life to build it without having to intermarry.

Yes.
After the fall the 3RD Law of Thermodynamic was intensified, thus our Genetic Make-Up has flaws in it and are increasing.
Thermodynamics, is the Exhibit A of Creation Science.

I am sure it is - every scientific explanation coming from the intelligent design lobby matches with pretty much all the findings of modern research and fill the voids that our scientists cannot answer.... the only question it leaves unanswered is: how do we get your heads out of your azzes?

It's a story!
It makes about as much sense as asking why buildings didn't just fall apart when Superman lifted them. It just makes the story better.
It's religion. It doesn't have to make sense.
