Read the Dalia Lama's Autobiography. It clears up a lot of misunderstanding about Buddhism that Americans think. A lot of people have picked up on Buddhism as the "cool" religion. It has a lot of nice teachings, but make sure you go to the sources of those teachings and not some Hollywood Buddhist.
Good luck!

Two of the best books you can ever encounter on the topic of Buddism are:
"The Three Pillars of Zen" by Phillip Kapleau
"Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" by Shunryo Suzuki

As I have always been interested in Zen, most of my information is in that school. But, Buddhism is vast tree of sacredness consisting of many different branches. You might want to read up on a number of different branches before you choose one that you feel more inclined to study and practice.

Namaste.

Look up these words and phrases:

Mahayana
Theravada
Zen
Satori
Ten Bulls

Also read "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones", by Paul Reps. It's best described as a "buddhism starter kit". Some buddhists would burn it, and some see it as worthwhile...that pretty much sums up buddhism.
