I would not have answered this since there were already good answers, BUT one of them scared me. DO NOT walk faster!!!!!
The best way to injure yourself is to go too fast too soon. stay with 2 mph for a week then go to higher speeds/inclines as you feel you can. Yes, faster speeds and higher inclines will burn more calories, but the percentage of people who increase too fast and injure themselves and never return to exercising is beyond belief. Think of it this way it didn't get on overnight and it ain't gonna get off overnight (except with liposuction-and I never had a single patient who had lipo where it did not come back)
BIG hint! get a partner to exercise/walk with. exercise is one of the most boring things on the planet to do. or--listen to music that REALLY rocks (find a type that allows you to allow the rithym of you walk to the beat of the music or--oral books anything to take your mind off this incredabily boring thing you're doing
weigh no more often than once a week AND take measurements of yourself--arms/waist/hips/thighs/calves. you may not loose much weight but loose inches. after-all you don't really care how much you weigh-do you? you DO care how you look. if you looked like a million dollars and weighed 400 pounds would you care. nope, you'd just say with a smile "I'm realllly solid"
the inch thing allows you to see progress even if you don't loose weight like you would like.
example: my wife worked out 2 hours a day for 5 months (with her girlfriend)
stair stepper/treadmill/gym ball/ stretches
lost 8 pounds
dropped two sizes
dropped her colesteral from 299 to 157
and was happier than she had been in 20 years
took three weeks off
went back to exercising
ignored me (afterall what do I know) and tried to start up where she left off (when you interupt/you need to start over again) tore a hamstring and hasn't worked out since (she has false started twice though)
Oh, I just re-read your question. two things
1. lots of water
2. eat healthier DON'T DIET change your diet-stick to a diet you like-if you don't like it you'll not stick to it or you'll cheat. just whatch what you eat and how much you eat. if you're not a fruit eater, then don't eat fruit. Ideally, a salad before every meal (except breakfast) really helps, but there again if you don't like salads you tend to load them up with things that make them really bad, so you're better off not eating them. bottom line: you gots to burn more than you take in or you'se ain't gonna loose. I'll never forget what a guy at church answered when I asked him how he had lost so much weight. HIs answer was: If it looks good/smells good/ or taste good---don't eat it. boy, diets suck

Before you hit your cardio and wlak you should be doing an ab workout.
If you are trying to loose fat from your stomach you need to individually condition it. At any local store you can purchase a workout ball. They come in differnt sizes you dont want the biggest one they have but you do not want the smallest one wither. If you are very over weight 200+ then I would suggest getting the larger ball. Anywho,
Sit on the ball facing the wall and position your butt in the center of the ball then open our legs so that you are balanced on the ball without using your hands. Already you are working out your abmuscles cause balancing causes your abs to tighten to keep you in place. Then just start cruching. I do 50 per set 3 times. This may seem hard at first but the more you do it the better your results will be.

Later on to increase the intensity instead of putting your feet directly on the floor try elevating them like tucking your toes underneath of a bar. or stack something heavy on a chair with open back rest and get behind the chair and put your toes through a slat to steady then crunch.
For obliques - try this position

To get to a fat burning rate you should be walking 3.0 mph or faster, what is referred to as a 'brisk' walk. What you eat is extremely important as well. Losing fat is simple, not easy, but simple, you need to burn more calories a day than you eat. I highly recommend WeightWatchers online Point System. It is very simple and you can still work in the things you love to eat. I have lost 75 lbs. in 18 months through changing my eating habits and portions and exercise. Cardio will burn the fat, I suggest getting various DVDs and trying a bunch of stuff. You may get bored and stop if you just keep doing the treadmill, though that's a good place to start. Crunches are good as well, just make sure to watch your form so you don't strain your neck. Again, video instruction or joining a class at a gym will help you with things like this. Most importantly, just keep at it! It may start slow, but you'll get there! Good luck!

Anything cardio that you do on a regular basis is going to burn enough calories for you to lose weight. This includes your stomach. If you want to build muscle after you lose the weight then you start targeting areas like arms with handweights, leg lifts, situps, crunches etc...
The treadmill is great, fast paced walking. I have a trampoline (mini) at home and I run on that while cranking the stereo! My all time favorite is my recumbant bike. I read while I sweat LOL
Good luck :)

Have morning lukewarm glasses of water; 2-3.
its a yoga called kapaalbhati. Do empty stomach, at least 1/2 half an hour should have passed since you eat..so the best time to do it is morning. Sit with your legs folded back straight but not stiff, breathe deep in and out. feel calm. place your hands each on respective knees with palms facing up. take a breath in and let it out forcefully through your nose. in that position push your tummy in and out. you will feel your tummy getting a stretch and better still you will feel great. its called "agnisaar". has no harm but prefer a yoga master if available.

Sit ups are a good way to lose fat from the torso area as long as they are done properly. Make sure you keep your feet flat on the ground and make sure that your midsection does all the work, dont use arms for leverage

Abs and sit-ups really help strengthen your "core." There are different excercises you can do to target different areas. Also minimizing your calorie intake (diet) helps. Excercise alone will not cut it. Try signing up at www.fitnessmagazine.com. They offer different excercise plans that target different areas of the body. Good luck.

Cardio will burn the fat and crunches will tone the abs. It may take awhile to see results, but they are there way before you know it. (You have to lose some of the fat to see the muscle tone.)
