My granddaughter has lice AGAIN and someone told my daughter in law to use flea shampoo. I have never heard of this, When my daughter got lice I used Queen Helene Cholesterol condition/strengthening cream and covered her whole head real thick with it. I put a shower cap over it for 2 hours and got rid of the lice. My daughter in law swears flea shampoo works (but it seems to me it doesn't because she keeps having to use it). What do you think?

Hi! Sorry to hear about your granddaughter's lice problem. I would not recommend using anything on a human that was intended for use on an animal. One possible reason your granddaughter keeps getting re-infested could be that the Nits...lice eggs...are not being removed from her head. Lice shampoos usually kill living lice and sometimes kill the eggs but the shampoos will not remove the eggs. The eggs should be removed from the child's head by hand to assure there will be no re-infestation. It only takes one louse to lay eggs and start a new infestation. Also, be sure that bed linens and clothing worn by the infested person are washed thoroughly in HOT water and dried in a HOT dryer. Pillows, stuffed animals, hats etc. should be tied up tightly in a garbage bag and not opened for 2 weeks. Carpets and furniture should be thoroughly vacuumed. Every person in the household should have their head checked for signs of lice and/or Nits and should be treated if needed. I know this is a lot of work, but getting rid of those pesky little bugs is worth it.
To close, I would like to recommend a device called a Robi Comb. It is a battery operated comb that detects and kills lice without chemicals. I own one and use it when lice is going around at school. It really works. Here is a link to some info on it: http://www.schoolhealth.com/shop/pe_90273.asp
I hope this information is helpful.
God Bless!

I dealt with lice a few years ago. I think my neice and youngest daughter got it from sharing softball helmets. We used the Nix shampoo treatment and thought we were okay, but it came back. Plus, we washed everything we could in hot water used a lice spray on our furniture, vacuumed throughly and even put all her stuffed animals in tightly sealed garbage bags on the porch. It is not safe to use the lice shampoos more than once on a young child because they are basically a poison. Plus, you want to concentrate on removing the nits (eggs) so new ones don't hatch and most anti-lice shampoos don't kill the nits. Our most effective treatment was a daily head check using a lice comb. It is quite tedious, but our Pediatrician even said it is the best way to eliminate them. Because my hair is also long I got the lice too and it helped us to coat our heads in vaseline and wrap it overnight. That supposedly smothers the lice plus conditions your scalp in the process! I've heard mayonnaise and olive oil are effective also. We eventually eradicated them and your daughter-n-law can too as long as she is diligent on a daily basis. I hope this helps!

I haven't heard of using flea shampoo for lice. Your daughter may want to be careful becuase the chemicals in the flea shampoo MAY be harmful -- they were approved for dogs and cats, not children. If you're looking for an alternative to the normal lice treatments, there are some natural treatments that use essential oils (lavender, thyme, geranium, tea tree, etc). You can find them in health food stores, or maybe in the natural section at your grocery/department store. Quantum is one company that makes one -- it's Quantum 123. I've heard good things about it.

I had a friend tell me the best way to get rid of it is NIX & when my son got it from school thats what we used , but a beautician friend told me to wash my daughters hair once a week in sea breeze & pull her hair up in a pony tail & spray it lightly with hair spray & it worked ... its hard to keep lice away from kids in school but the sea breeze worked like a charm & as for the flea shampoo I heard the same thing but it never worked on anyone I knew the NIX is more costly but it is well worth the money

Just use a brand made for lice, like Quell. Don't mess with methods like flea shampoo.

Use the lice treatment only. Fleas are a different insect.

no ,But vinegar works just pour it on damp hair and cover your head with a bag for about 1 hr or so then rince well and then start picking out those eggs or bugs.I tell you the trick to never getting lice is to use hair spray lice does not like to work hard to get in hair my Daughter use to get it all the time and someone told me to use hair spray they love clean soft hair.It works Great and I can't stand thinking about something crawling in my or on my head.So get a friend to help you pull all the critters out of your head and make sure in bright sunny area so you get them all and start washing cleaning and bagging everything up or you wont get rid of them ...Good Luck Danielle
