Under the crime listings in our paper, they have categories like DUI, battery, possession, ETC with names listed of whomever did the crime. What does "Hold" mean? It bothers me because the guy that was listed is a known sex offender in our neighborhood..does this mean he violated his probation or ???

There are a couple possible meanings, depending on the department. But generally, if they are in jail for a "Hold", they were arrested on some type of warrant from another agency and are being held in the local jail until the other agency can come get the person. They were not actually charged with anything by the department that arrested him, but the other department asked them to "hold" him. It could be the next town over or across the country. The warrant could be anything from an unpaid traffic ticket to murder, as long as the other agency wants him bad enough to come get him.

It's also possible that it is a probation hold. The guy could have come into contact with the police for some reason, and they ran a check on him that showed he was on probation. If the officer contacted the probation officer and explained the situation, the probation officer may have asked them to put a hold on him until the probation officer could file the paperwork on a probation violation. Probation violations can be serious violations sometimes, but a lot of probation violations are for things like Driving Without a License or falling behind on paying his outstanding fines. If it was really serious, they would have filed a criminal charge for whatever he was doing, and then they would have revoked his probation in addition to that.

There's really no sure way to tell what happened without actually being involved in it or at least working in that department. You might try calling the police department and asking, but they may or may not know how it was used in that particular situation.
