A bigger golf ball is easier to hit and is more forgiving when struck imperfectly. As for the ballistics answer, I would have to say the smaller the ball is the better it would be for stronger winds. ( less wind resistant) but I can see where the mass would help with the distance needed or desired.

Although I do not play the game, but the reason of making a larger golf ball is perhaps that it can sustain strong winds and can easily be projectilled towards it desired targets (i.e. the holes). It involves Ballistic science I believe.

A larger ball supposodly has a larger sweet spot and generates less spin, thereby decreasing severe slices and hooks and improving accuracy.
