I think if they are driving an automobile, motorcycle or anything else should also be charged with something like attempted assult/murder or something like that. If they are drunk enough to receive a DWI then they had no reason to be out on the road. If they are in an accident and are the cause of the accident, someone could have and might have been killed. I think the DWI charge with something else added to it would make a lot of people think before they drink, especially if they are driving because the end result would impact their life a lot more than a DWI. In this state, every year that is sentenced can be counted as 2 month in the Department of Corrections if they are good and do not cause any trouble. Sometimes, it's not in the pen, it's on weekends or even taken away if they enroll in a facility. What is your feeling on this subject?

i agree.
a vehicle is a dangerous weapon.. even in sober hands.
what really gets to me is those Repeat DUI offenders (and sex offenders).. they let 'em go free again!? only to kill/hurt others later! what the Hell is up with that??
these losers should be made to Walk.. or take the bus.

in the wrong hands, vehicles can be as dangerous as firearms. perhaps they should be treated as such.. and so should the penalties.

I think that you are out of your Goddamn, bloody mind. DUI laws are nothing more than the brainchild of a bunch of uptight, inbread, life-sucking whores now known as MADD. The government just happened to hop on the band wagon because they saw it as gigantic fund raiser, and they were right. DUI laws are now simple fund raisers utilized to pay the salaries of local/regional government officials. Its absolutely absurd. In most states, the legal limit for intoxication is between .08 and .10, which is scientifically bullsh*t. I could sit in the smoking section of any family resturaunt and walk of the place with a .08 without every having tasted a sip of alcohol. A .08 BAL is not something that was set in place because anatomic research and trial and error, the .08 was put in place by some self-serving baby-boomers and saw a good way to make the government money. DUI law are technicaly unconstitutional, but since when does our modernized government give a flying f*** about our rights? George Bush the First didnt, Bill Clinton sure as HELL didnt and old G-Dubya himself doesnt. All it is, is simply another means of oppression and control. I know that MADD loves to run commercials about people that die in car accidents that are DUI related and the whole old chestnut, but the truth is that more people probably die each year due to mosquito bites than do DUI victims. Now, I don't want to sound completely heartless, people that ACTUALLY drive drunk and cause accidents should be dealt accordingly, but if a dude had a couple of beers and decides to drive home should not be arrested and treated like a terrorist. I hate the government, I hate cops and I that the world would just end already. With people out there like YOU that believe more control over people via the government is the answer, the more I want to just die.

Do you think it would really make a difference? Or if DWI became a felony, would it make any difference? You take their license, and they drive anyway. You put an interlock on the car so it won't start, and they get their friend to blow in it...

If you think about it, we are releasing criminals because there isn't enough room in the jail, so what are we to do?

Yes, it's a real problem, but I don't see an immediate answer to it.

In Pennsylvania, which is probably representative of most places, DWI itself does not constitute reckless endangerment. However, if, in your drunken state, you then go up an off ramp to a highway or drive the wrong way on a one way street, THEN other reckless and endangering charges are attached.

Rather than jail, I'd like to see anyone who got a DWI have any vehicle they own or were driving painted bright yellow with red stripes. If their license has been suspended, this will enable cops to spot them driving from a mile away. If they are caught driving with a suspended license, their faces should be tattooed bright yellow with red stripes. Any bar serving them would be subject to financial damages if they get in an accident. If the drunk is caught driving again, s/he should be forced to where a nose ring and ear rings that are the size of dinner plates and painted (you guessed it) bright yellow with red stripes.

This may sound slightly extreme to some folks, but it would definitely get drunk drivers off the roads. A final penalty could be to have the entire body tattooed bright yellow and red. And they could be forced to wear yellow and red-striped clothes, smoke yellow and red-striped cigarettes, paint their houses and furniture yellow with red stripes! Yeah, they'd learn their lesson.

What about just plain old dumb people, or people with bad driving skills in general. Also older citizens.. Should they be charged with attempted murder because they might possibly cause harm?? Where do you draw the line?

If they do nothing other than drive while intoxicated, then no. How can you try a person for attempted whatever, if that never happened? DO you just want to make stuff up? Or, do you want to bring back prohibition? Here's an idea for you; they still have dry counties, go live in one. Hint - the Jack Daniels distillery is located in a dry county.
