Before booking on expedia check with american airlines, quite often the price is almost identical on expedia versus the actual airline to fly. I always book thru the actual airline because it is usually no more than 20$ difference. Then you usually get bonus miles for booking on their site.

If you just insist on booking with expedia then you may have to call american after booking to make sure your aa number gets put on for this ticket. But I'm not sure if you can then upgrade.

Best bet call aa first to find out.

First off, ditch American Airlines. They belong to the OneWorld alliance which includes British Airways and the pisspoor Aer Lingus and Iberia. The previous answer said that the (AA) frequent flyer was restricted and this is very true. Start flying with the Star Alliance which includes United Airlines, Lufthansa, British Midland and others. With their frequent flyer it is just a question of turn up (with a cheap ticket) - have you get any room up front with the driver - yes - how many miles - x thousand - good I have them - and off you go. The One World upgrade is a major operation and once done cannot be undone. Even Skyteam are better! Oh! and American have a minimum ticket class before you can upgrade - H class. It may come from expedia, that's OK - it just depends on the booking class.

It depends on the airline but the short answer is probably no. I believe Advantage card is American Airlines? Their frequent flier program is one of the most heavily restricted. And when you buy from expedia or similar sites, the ticket comes with lots of restrictions; no upgrades is almost always one of those restrictions. You'd need at least 10,000 miles for that anyway, maybe more, depending on the flight. If you are accruing that many miles flying, you should stick to booking directly with the airline. By the way, credit card miles are a lot harder to redeem than miles you get by actually flying. Sorry to sound so negative!
