My fiance and I are getting eloped. We both live at home? Today or tomorrow we have to get a marriage license in order to go forth with our wedding on Tuesday. The problem is my fiance don't have her social security card, which we will need. Her mom has it. She doesn't buy that she needs it for a job interview. Her mom has it locked up in a little safe. We're keeping this wedding quiet. We both still live at home, and are having the big ceremony with the family in June.

If she's an adult, she simply tells her mother she wants to get her papers in order and needs the card.

But then again, if you're both going to be grownups about this, don't go behind everyone's backs. What are you going to do, elope, then continue to live at your parents' homes and just get together to have sex, letting everyone think you're getting married for real in June?

Don't waste parental money on the big ceremony if you're going to already be married. It would be a lie.

Where do you live? Usually you only need a picture ID.

And how are the families going to feel when they find this out? Especially since you have a wedding planned for June. Make sure the two of you aren't shooting yourself in the foot. You families may not see a need for a bash in June if you're already wed. You may be cheating EVERYONE out of a very special day.

Generally the only reason you need a social security card is if you don't have access to a birth certificate original (which you can obtain a stamped copy of easily from either the hospital of record or the local courthouse where you/she was born.

If you do not have access to either of these things (which it sounds to me) then I assume you are barely legal to marry, and also that your families are clearly against it.

Marriage is difficult enough, but if your families are against it (especially hers) it will make things much more difficult. She will want to talk with her mother but because of strain between them it won't go well for some time. I went through this myself - take my word for it... eloping is more about rebellion and less about practicality.

Reconsider and wait... lying to her parents is a very bad way to begin...

First of all, if she is old enough to get married, she's old enough to have her own social security card. She just needs to walk into a social security office, tell them she's lost her card, and they will give her a new one.

Also, you don't need a social security card to get a marriage license. All you need is a picture id.

It is extremely bad manners to lie to your guests (next June) and have them believe they are there for your actual wedding, when in fact they are seeing a re-enactment. Just get married in June, like you're already planning.

Secondly-- why is your fiancee, who hopefuly is an adult, not in posession of her own official papers? Her mother still holding on to them for her sounds crazy. Is your bride still in high school? Adults have their own social security cards.

She can get a duplicate one from your local federal building.

Thirdly, fiancee=woman, fiance=man.

WOW!! I sure don't know what to say. I mean if you are both of age, then IMO the mother needs to give the daughter her card anyway!! I really have no advice, except good luck!!

Oh yeah, no waiting period either. Good luck and best wishes.
