Maricopa County Sherrif Jo Arpaio is a tough sherrif and uses jail as a punsihment rather than a rehab center, though prisoners do get rehab near their release date. So the question is, how effective is his technique vs councilling, education, and what some consider coddling. It would also be intersting to see what the costs are of his way compared to traditional and rehab techniques

It is about 1%: You do not want to return and here is why:

He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped smoking and p**** magazines in the jails. Took away their weights. Cut off all but "G" movies.

He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked! up the cable TV again only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel.
When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value.
When the inmates complained, he told them, "This isn't the
Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails.

When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116
degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at
the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.

Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks.
"It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate
who has lived in the tents for 1 year. "It's inhumane."

Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna
sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic.

He said Wednesday, that he told all of the inmates, "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too and they have to wear full battle
gear, but they didn't commit any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!"

I saw a special on TV about Maricopa County and the Sherrif. From what it said, that Sherrif and his ways of running his jail is great. They not only are raising and growing most of their food, they are learning skills to live in the free world. There were interviews with people who "visited" there in the past and some were good, some not so good. All of them did say that he didn't put up with rule breakers, he treated everyone the same, he did not mistreat anyone and he actually was a great man. The ones that said they didn't like him also said it was because he made them work or if they were whiners, he dressed them in pink jumpsuits and they had to chain gang it and clean the roadsides. He is actually running his jail like it should be. When you are convicted of something and put in jail you are no longer in the free world. a lot of the younger generation that he has helped by putting them in his jail said they feel like he actually cared about them and will visit him frequently just so he knows he made an impact on someone and got them on the right track. I would say his technique is better than most. in my state, some get rehab treatment but the prisons here are not much different than the free world. my ex is in prison for numerous felony DWI's, theft of property, wreckless burning and other things. He is bi-polar also. this is his 4th or 5th stay. he does not have to do much at all. i remember the last time he served time his only "job" was to put toilet paper by 1 toilet and clean that one toilet every morning and evening. THAT'S ALL! They could also get a large any or all toppings delivered to the pen for $5.00. We can't get that deal....They have boneless chicken breast delivered to them and pay nothing. Can we get the same deal? We pay for our Doctor appointments and medication. They pay less than $1.00 for it all. We have to pay an attorney for any services rendered. They pay nothing...Not only do we have to pay for our everything, we pay theirs! they get to take college classes free and the credits can be transferred to another college when they get out. i want that same deal. When my ex was out and had to report to the parole officer, he got his fines marked off because he did not have money to pay them. looking at this and more (i could go on forever) which one seems like it would be more effective?

i imagine you could bypass in an positioned money on their books yet no longer confident. The Maricopa County Sheriff's place of work and Sheriff Joe Arpaio are properly prevalent for distinct issues - Tent city, pink undies, eco-friendly bologna, and chain gangs are merely some. yet no longer confident about money on the books....
